I think you shuold definitely leave it in Reverse. On my old car I used to put it in 1st, but the owners manual of our G35 says put it in reverse. Which is fine, I always put it in gear, becuase, as someone mentinoed, our parking brakes aren't that great.

i would always just shut off my cars, in gear. on a hill, i'd also use ebrake.

though someone had good post of putting on brake, then gear so as not to strain tranny

I always put my car in gear regardless of the terrain that I'm on. The e-brake on the G's really suck. I just need to find a way to take out the console so I can get to the adjusting nut.

I leave it in N and use the hand brake. I might start leaving the car in gear now and use the parking brake.

Ask yourself "what do Automatic transmissions do?". Obviously "Park" is in gear. And I assume people with Auto trannies always use the parking brake. Therefore, in gear AND parking brake is safest.

(Who knows? - maybe mice will gnaw at your brake cable - its nice to have a backup plan.)

I think that the point has been made: Use your ebrake to rest the car, but put it in gear also for backup, so you dont' stress ur transmission?
