If well taken care of the engine will be the last thing to give you problems.

Well I got the car used a while ago and the guy who owned it before me took good care of it cause he took it to the dealership for maintainance that i bought it from. With the way I drive i try to keep the oil changed ever 2000-2500 miles. With premium gas only...

LOL!

If you maintain it well, most modern cars will last well over 100k miles.

VQ's can easily go over 350K with maintenance... I've read people have gone over 500K before overhauling; however, oil leaks and things like water pump and timing components fail before this time... It's all relative.

Yea but how well do they keep their compression and performance once you get up into the higher mileage?

Easily. Many car manufacturers these days even warranty the powertrain for 6 years and 100K miles. I know GM just started doing that.

I think realisticly, any car motor built around 1998 or newer will last to at least 150K. The main reason why people junk them is more likely to be blown transmissions/transfer cases, rear ends, or engine failure that results from a failed timing belt(not changing it according to maintenance recommendations), or engine failure due to a drivers not acknowledging warning signs of a failed component such as a head gasket, waterpump, oil pump, etc. All this is dependant on the person keeping up with maintenance and assumes normal driving for a majority of the time(not dedicated track use).

True. There was that guy who drove his Saab for 1 mil miles. Had the original turbo on it too. He just did oil changes and replaced a few parts which failed at one time or another. He said it still ran like it was brand new...not sure about that one.

There are a few stories like that of people who have close to or just over a million miles on their car. The guy you're talking about with the Saab is one of the more famous long-milleage car stories. The most famous is that guy with the '66 Volvo who has 2.5 million miles on it with mostly original main parts. Pretty impressive, wouldn't you say?

Today I heard a squeaking under my hood... is that fairly normal? Sounded like belts or something like that... not very loud but I guess you could notice it fairly easy.

most likely your belts..I've had my belt tensioners tightened like twice at the dealer already.
