Heavier weight oil

Hey guys,

In light of all the oil-consumption talk lately (and the fact that I have the same problem with my 6mt), I'm considering trying a heavier-weight oil to stem the loss. Right now I'm just using Mobil1 5w30, as most do.

Has anyone tried this? Does it seem to help? If so, what did you switch to?

I by accident put 10-30 in the car one time as a fluid filler (I was down a quart), the car seemed to run like shyt. I noticed how the car was running before I noticed that I put the wrong oil weight.

A friend of mine with a Z that has the oil consumption problem has been suggested to use a heavier weight oil like 15W-50. This *should* be of some help, but I'd see if anyone else with a VQ has tried it. Unfortunately, my buddy is too lazy to use a different oil or take his car into Nissan for a new motor.

Mobile 1 is a very thin oil, I recommend German Castrol Syntec 0w-30. Dont let the 0w fool you, The oil is almost a 40 weight. Its only available at Autozone. It is also a true synthetic like Mobile 1 used to be.

I have seen several used oil analysis on the VQ engine with this oil, and the VQ loves it. One member of Bob is the Oil Guy ran this oil in his G35 for 7500 miles and oil test results showed virtually no wear at all.

Try this first.......

Just use Mobil 1 Synthentic 10/30 on your next oil change and try this before
you jump into a lesser quality oil!

Uhmm where have you been? Mobil 1 is a lesser quality oil. Mobil sued Castrol for calling their oil a full synthetic. Which according to Mobil it wasnt a full synthetic like M1 since its not made from a Group IV base stock.

They lost the case, so they decided to start using the cheaper base stock just like Castrol, pennzoil etc. Why make a real synthetic that costs you more money to make then the competition who is charging the same?

German Castrol Syntec 0w-30, Amsoil, redline are some of the few remaining TRUE synthetics( Group IV). The other Castrol syntecs, penzzoil platinum and now Mobile 1 are not TRUE synthetics. They are hydrolocked Group III oils.

Thanks for the help. A friend of mine uses German Castrol in his M Coupe and seems to agree with Derek, so I might give that a shot. It will be time to change it in another couple of weeks, so I should know if it helps in a month or so. I'll post the results.

Please visit Bob is the Oil Guy, German Castrol has its own forum thats how popular it is. Also swing by the used oil analysis forum and search for your car. You will be amazed at the results german castrol produces! I remember reading an article where M1 10w-30 was actually thinner then 5w-30 at operating temp German Castrol is one of the thickest 30 weights when it reaches operating temp, its closer to a 40 then a 30 weight.

P.S. Autozone is the only place you can find GC
