Driving In Snow - NIGHTMARE!!!

And I mean, a nightmare of EPIC proportions!!
The snowfall that blanketed the Northeast this past week nearly left me stranded, and certainly put some extra wear on my clutch.
Basically, if there was ANY white stuff on the ground, I had a top speed of 2 MPH, and was going sideways to boot - just letting off the gas put me sideways, and I can assure you I have no small amount of experience driving RWD cars in the snow!
Got to my Fri. nite poker game (made $80, not a total loss), had to leave the car and pick it up the next day, at which point it took me half and hour just to get out of the parking spot!
I'll tell ya, if my (on order) snow tires don't work out, I'll be trading my Coupe in for either an AWD G35 sedan, or a Jaguar X-Type.

Re: Driving In Snow - NIGHTMARE!!!

I had the same frekin nightmare monday in colorado. I was driving "ok" going about 5mph with the flashers on, and going up a hill, had no momentum and had to stop in the middle of a two lane highway! managed to get it off to the side and home eventually, somehow. The car is now a week old and had not had time to get snow tires yet, they are on order and should be here friday, blizzaks lm22 18", hopefully they will help, never want to turn the car in. Need them to work for two seasons till I move to california.

Honestly, what were you expecting? The car to handle just "decent" in that type of weather? Experience with RWD cars is one thing, but these are summer tires we are talking about here. Technically, you shouldn't even drive on them in sub 40 degree weather with DRY conditions.

The car with the Pilots on is useless and dangerous. You're better to hitch a ride, cab or anything than drive it without snows on. Until you get the snows on don't take chances.

This is why I live in Houston.
I might have smog, 115 degree heat for 9 months a year, 100% humidity, mosquitos the size of buzzards, the fattest people in America and of course the worst traffic east of LA, but at least I don't have to deal with snow/ice.

Re: Driving In Snow - NIGHTMARE!!!

After several hundred posts on how you need snow tires what did you expect. Put the stock performance tires on any car and it will not be drivable on ice or snow. I drive my coupe in the winter in all kinds of conditions with no problem.

Honestly, I am not sure how it is possible for you to be caught like that. Did the dealer that sold you the car not clue you in on the issue of snow tires for winter driving. They should have.

Actually, my dealer never mentioned that the pilots are terrible in snow. But the common sense should tell everybody that summer ultra high performance tires are no good in snow.

I hope you guys have LSD b/c it makes a huge difference when working in conjunction with VDC. I drove in snow last year. The car will go sideways when I abruptly let off the gas or accelerated hard. The LSD and VDC always brought the car straight back in line.

Was the G35 and Z ever NOT available with an LSD and computer controlled traction control? As far as I know, that was stock on each and every one.

That is why So Cal is the best. You only have to sacrifice white Christmas', deal with smog, and pay for overpriced housing. =P
