tow hook blank
tow hook blank
Hello, I have the StrictlyZ front license plate bracket and need to take the blank out of the bumper for the tow hook. I don't want to scratch anything, so was wondering what tool you used to take yours out. I poked at it a few days ago with a cloth covered screwdriver and it didn't immediately pop off. Now that I have the plate holder to install I have to get serious about it. Any tips or suggestions? Should I just get a small screwdriver and push in the slot? Not knowing what the tab looks like that is holding the blank it makes it a little harder to figure out.
Thanks,
Greg

Re: tow hook blank
I just used a very small flat head screw driver and put it in the little space where there's extra width (on the right side as you face it, I believe), and it popped right out.

Re: tow hook blank
A flat blade works fine. I then took the tow hook plate and dremeled a hole slightly larger than the license plate mount and "filled the gap" with a large grommet. Now the plate holder goes through the tow hook cover to make a clean install. GL
Re: tow hook blank
I was just wondering... you put the tow hook on (its possible someone can just unscrew it and make it theirs...
I was wondering WHAT IF SOMEONE HITS YOUR FRONT BUMPER PARKING.... or u hit something... what will happen to the towhook or the plate????????

Re: tow hook blank
GL, Drilling a hole in the blank for the custom install is a good idea. I was thinking the big square hole might not look so good behind the plate bracket.
If someone hits the plate in a parking lot:
The tow hook is in the trunk so nothing would happen to it.
The plate would probably get trashed.
The plate bracket might get trashed.
The question you are probably asking is what will happen to the frame that the plate holder is screwed into. Who knows, if the impact is relatively light, probably nothing.
I park leaving about a foot in front of my car instead of hugging the front line. That gives people with poor depth perception a little leeway. I don't plan to parallel park this car.

Re: tow hook blank
I just got my plate holder as well and after looking at it I'm a little scared to put it on. I'm afraid some a$$hole will just try to kick it off. How many inches does the plate holder protrude from the front when it's on?

Re: tow hook blank
I just installed my tow hook plate holder. The plate is about an inch from the bumper cover. You have plenty of room to work back there with the long allen wrenches that come with the installation kit. The plate seems to float in front of the car so i put a license plate frame on the front so it doesn't look so bare up front.
As far as being hit up front, it seems to me that since there is only one mounting point to the car, if someone hits the plate off center, the mounting plate that your plate is attached to will bend from the middle. Given the space away from the bumper cover and the weight and stiffness of the mounting plate you're somewhat protected from "incidental contact". What I think would really make the install is a front plate frame that is color matched and molded to blend in to the bumper. That way it doesn't look like the plate is just floating out in front of the car
Sometimes all I look forward to is the drive home..
