Thanks Rambo.. No I haven't done any mods yet. I love the S2K for what it is... it is such a misunderstood car. My G35C compliments it so well. They are a perfect match.

What's exactly misunderstood about the S2K? Just curious.

Sal

BTW.. I drove the manumatic again last night and I'm definitely ordering the stick. If I had the AT, I don't think I'd ever use the sport shift option because the trans still doesn't do what I want it to do when I want it to do it. I can see all of your points if you're stuck in traffic on a daily basis (wouldn't bother me because I've been driving stick all of my life), but the auto trans definitely neuters this sports car IMO.

Re: Auto trans? Is there any joy?

I had an S2000 up till October, when I sold it for my G35 Coupe. That car will hold a special place in my heart....I loved it!

The car is "misunderstood" in that some people feel it rides too harsh, interior too "spartan", not enough torque, etc. I personally found that the ride was firm but easily livable. That firm ride is what gave the car the go-kart like feel and agility. I also liked the simple purpose-oriented interior....no DVD screens, coffee-makers, ugly wood trim, etc to distract the driving. As for the torque, the car can use a bit more torque but I found the car to be very tractable at below 6000 rpms and very smooth for such a highly-strung engine. I guess the best way to put it is that the car is definitely not for everyone....a Z3/Z4 would be more of a "every man's car". That is one of the things that drew me to the S2K....the single-minded purpose/feeling the car gave. I sold the car for something more practical, but I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one if I was in the market for another sports car.

My .02 cents.

Mike

Re: Auto trans? Is there any joy?

FormerS2000 is dead on.. It isn't as daily drievable as other vehicles. It is misunderstood because most ppl like to mash the gas and shift. The S2000 is much faster than it feels. It handles like a go-Kart on rails. It is a sports car and doesn't pretend to be anything more. Mine didn't even come with a clock!

It is hard to explain...

I am just fortunate to be able to keep my S2K now as a weekend/track vehicle and the G35C as my daily driver. I have a DE event coming up in Pensacola in March and then some lap time at No Problem Raceway coming up in April. Those are places where the S2000 belongs.... not traffic or at the parking lot of the grocery store.

I still feel guilty being able to own a G35C and an S2000. I am telling you... these cars compliment each other so well. I am honest though... if I didn't own an S2000 before the G35C came out I would have gotten a 6MT and been just as happy.

lzrcoupe,

You are lucky to have both an S2000 and a G35 Coupe. I agree they compliment one another very nicely. I just could not justify having both cars and insuring them as well. My red S2000 was a 2000 year model...very first year...vin #82.

Hey, are you a member at S2000online.com? I still lurk there and visit once in a while. I have been a member since May 2000.

Re: Auto trans? Is there any joy?

I've been driving sticks for the past 12 years. While I do hate most automatics, I love my 5AT. It's very punchy and always seems to shift at the right times. And when I need to take control, I can with the manumatic. Why did I go auto? learned that I could love an automatic after driving a Lexus SC300.

No, I don't talk on the cell or do anything else while driving. I'm not even that bothered by the clutch in traffic.

All that said, the manumatic is absolutely nothing like the experience of driving a stick. It's just an advanced version of the D-2-1 type of shifter. Honestly I think if you find driving around in manumatic mode full time "fun", you probably should have bought the 6mt.

On the other hand, driving an automatic isn't something to be ashamed of, either. This isn't your ordinary automatic transmission that sucks all the life and performance out of your car. It's a luxury sports coupe, not a raw performance machine. The luxury part means being pampered with lots of unnecessary automating gizmos and creature comforts, and leaving the shifting up to an advanced computer controlled transmission is your right and privilege. Own it! Chances are it does it better than you would anyway.

There's no wrong choice between the two. Try both and decide what is going to be best for you and leave other's opinions out of it!

I second that... Auto transmission for life =) Seen an auto 280z today at the Nissan meet w/ greddy TT kit. Thing was insanely quick, very efficient car.

Like I always say... Row your own gears but the only way to take any advantage or lead would require you to perfectly shift. However, we all know that most of the public drivers are not flawless like that =)

Re: Auto trans? Is there any joy?

my coupe is mt, but my daily driver is a sentra automatic.
my son asks me why do i keep my hand on the shifter when i drive the sentra - force of habit. i also constantly shut off the car while leaving it in gear.

04 6mtC, DG - possibly most babied G on the board.

I love driving my 5AT coupe. If I feel the need to shift gears, I can ride my sportbike, albeit only in the summer.

I personally wouldn't be happy without one of each, but since we're on a
rare AT love train I'll add that this is by far the best AT I've personally had the pleasure of driving (other than the manumatic being upside down).

I have a great idea!

I have an idea: Lets make a separate AT vs MT forum so this ridiculous time-wasting weekly debate can be kept separate from the real useful information on the site. This would also make it so that anyone that actually cares to know 10,000 opinions on which is "better" can read that fourm for hours.

I agree, we've now resorted to digging up threads from last year to get the AT vs MT going again...this truly is the forum's favorite topic.
