Lost to a benz SL500
So Im driving home last night around 7pm. I make a right turn on a major street and pull into the left lane in 1st. To my right I see some silver car hugging my side through the turn in the next lane (only 2 lane street). For those of you in Arcadia, I was on Foothill above the mall where theres a 1 mile strip of open road. Anyway I decide to gun 1st and I threw it in 2nd. He wasnt really racing me so i stayed in 2nd for a couple seconds. Then I see the headlights catching up and hear his engine getting louder and closer. All i can remember after was redlining 2nd to 3rd with him right on my side. I redlined 3rd and he's a little ahead. I throw it in 4th, but i think i shifted too slow. I look and he was gone, about two cars ahead. He weaved into my lane to avoid a car ahead and it was over =(
I laughed until the next red light. What a rush. I pull up to his driver side to give him props but the ***** ignored me. The light turns green, so I glance at the back of his car to see the model. A brand new SL500 roadster still sportin the dealer licence.
I guess its time for me to change my username. But hey this is my first time owning a manual. I barely learned how to drive stick 2 weeks before I bought it.
So what do you guys think, was this a fair match, unfair, or did I just plain screw up? LOL.

Re: Lost to a benz SL500
well, no, you probably didn't screw up. the benz gotta be very heavy, but much of it's got to be a honkin' motor under that hood, too. and if it's any comfort to you, i've been driving man trans a long time and i still screw up especially in the 6mt.
if it's "only" a stock SL500, it does weigh 4065 pounds. BUT it does have a 5 liter (slightly smaller than this year's 'vette) V8 making 302 hp and 339 lbs. of torque. still, with all that weight, about 600 lbs. heavier than the gcoupe, you'd think it'd be a slug. however, there are times when mercedes tends to under-advertise their horsepower. or, it could've been a modified SL, as in AMG which would put lots more horesepower under the hood and easily make up for the fatso car.

Yeah, if it was an AMG, you would definitely have gotten spanked. However, if magazine road tests are any indication (I know, you can't trust them completely due to different drivers and weather conditions), the base SL 500 does not appear to be as quick as our Gs.

Re: Lost to a benz SL500
The SL500 is running 0-60's in low 6's, and 1/4's in mid-high 14's, so its a little slower than your Gcoupe statistacilly speaking, but his was auto so he just floored it, and the small mess up on your shift gave him the win. If he had an SL55 AMG you would have known it, its running the 0-60's in the low 4's.

Re: Lost to a benz SL500
0-60 times for Benzes are misleading. MBs don't launch too well; their traction control and other electronic gizmos really like to bog the cars down on hard launches. But on a roll, the torquey MB engines are able to put all the power down and pull really hard. Look at acceleration tests between the E55K and the RS6. They are about even 0-60. But in 30-70 tests, the E55K blows the RS6 away. Not even close. So I'm not surprised that the SL500 pulled away from a roll. Those things have a very fat torque curve.

Same here. I had maybe 2 hours total practice time on a 94 altima before buying my G. Of course the clutch is way different so I kept screwing up at first. Oh well now I pretty much have it down. But I still hate starting on a hill, and my downshifts kinda suck.

Re: Lost to a benz SL500
i see alot of G35s in my school. i go to poly and i see like 6 coupes a day.
SoCalG35Mashin, i practice at nite time downshifting. now...hills are the problem, and...on-ramps(hills) with lights.
they're not hard when theres no cars behind you but i panic when i see cars.

I don't see that many coupes around Arcadia/San Gabriel area. Do you work around there? I'm usually in San Marino area."
I live about 2 miles north of the mall, up santa anita.
