Hi all,
This is my first post here in the forum. I've been a reader since before I bought my G. About a month ago I purchased a 2004 G35 Coupe 6MT with 56000 miles.
All through high school and college I had been dreaming of the day I could afford a truly great car. In high school I bought a 1985 Fiero GT (same vintage as me), for $400 without a working engine. I spent about a year getting the car into drivable shape. The entire project (including car) set me back about $2000. That includes paying my friend for use of his shop and to lend a hand. I built it with every performance part that made for a N/A Fiero (including pistons, a lumpier cam, new valve train components, etc...) and that baby accelerated like a couch. A phenomenal-handling couch, but a couch nonetheless.
After fabricating a custom turbo system for it, I ruined some part of the delicate ignition system, and was never able to get it to run reliably again. I sold the turbo system for $1000, and parked the Fiero behind my friend's shop, where it remains, to this day.
I'm 22, I've just graduated from school in May of this year with a "dual" degree in electrical and computer engineering *** laude. I was accepted to graduate school, but funding didn't work out. Now I work for Goss International as a motion controls design engineer.
That's when I decided it was time to decide between the BMW 330ci, the Audi S4, Volvo S60R, and the Infiniti G35. After reading about the 330ci's problems, the Audi S4's unreliable turbos, the Volvo S60R's constantly failing angle gear, I decided on the trusty G-car.
I decided I didn't want a rev-up motor since I guess it was easier to gain 10hp than to replace the brakes (Brembos versus rev-up!). I've since discovered that gaining a real 10hp across the entire power band is almost a myth in the world of the VQ engine. Whether it be a spacer, cat-back exhaust, hi-flow cats, or a whole new intake plenum, extra horsepower and torque seem to elude the VQ. No worries though, I still love being able to crank from 60mph to a stop in less than 125 feet.
I've always serviced my own cars (from my first 1990 Toyota Corolla DX sedan, to my 1985 Fiero GT), and I plan to service my G35. I've already performed a routine oil/filter change with the highest grade dinosaur juice I could find. I intend to go fully synthetic on my next change. Also, for the record, I change my oil every 3k miles; I don't try to "stretch" it; in my dream world the oil could come out almost as clean as it went in.
Anyway, I drive safely, but enjoy my G as much as possible. I've had it up to 100mph on a flat stretch of highway (who hasn't at least once), but I make a point to only do 40 in a 35, and I ALWAYS use my turn signal. I only drive with VDC on in the rain, and I know to keep at least 3 seconds behind the guy in front of me, no matter how slow he drives.
As for contributing to the forum: I know how to use the search button, and I hope, once I know my car inside and out, that I will be a true technical contributor here, not just a "will these wheels fit?" or a "how much will I gain if I put 8" diameter exhaust on with a VTEC intake?" guy. I already love my car, and I'm learning to respect her.

I'm eyeballing a DG 05 with no navi, or an OB 04 with navi. Both black interior, both tinted, both have 20k miles roughly, both with aero packages. TOUGH CHOICES!!! The black 04 has no warranty, the 05 still has some. That's what makes me lean towards the 05. But I want Brembo's and navi and the 04 is cheaper (not like that makes any difference in the long run.) God, it makes my stomach turn in knots trying to decide.

LOL! Great first post. (ummm..we can tell you're an engineer )
My little brother used to have a thing about Fieros. It was a fun car in it's time. We had a few in various states along with one that had a ferarri kit.
Upload your pics on photobucket and link them. It seems to be the easiest thing.
However, you have an engineering background, so I'll expect something a little more refined.

nice to see another engineer on here I'm an industrial, class 2002 from RIT.
