Re: good hid brand?

Tough to say, but when they say things like "Very Easy to setup just like 10-15mins".....makes me very skeptical............along w/ the price, that makes me even more worried. I'd rather buy from a local reputable shop so they could service you when something does go bad.

Re: good hid brand?

I wouldnt mess wit it. I'd advise phillips or hella brands. Conversion kits and other brands in opinion aren't reliable. Also with such a high voltage product you should probably go with a good brand name. Good luck with whatever you choose

You get what you pay for. Thats my motto in life...I'd advise you get a good reputable brand such as Phillips or OSRAM, Hella, etc.

Re: good hid brand?

I agree with ozracer...Phillips and Hella make the most reliable kits....and dont forget hid bulbs do blow and can cost anywhere from 80-300 per bulb..depending where you shop..ebay is the cheapest.....I'd go with phillips if I were you..they make kits that are 8000k-14000k if thats what u were looking for...they also make 4500k-7500k kits. and you cna find those Phillips/ Hella kits on ebay from $300-500 all day long. spend the extra few bucks. A year ago these identical kits were upwards of $1200 now there much more affordable.

Re: good hid brand?

The problem with ebay is that they may claim that they are philips, osram, or hella, but they might not be. Some people on the acura forums awhile back ordered them from ebay and they ended up getting some cheap copies of the hid brands. I think its better to get it from a reliable store. I would definately recommend philips though.

Re: good hid brand?

Philips only makes 4100k and 6000k bulbs. They are working on a 5000K bulb and it should be out shortly if not already.

Get genuine philips bulbs and ballasts and get them from a reliable source. There are a lot of fakes out there.

Re: good hid brand?

Surprisingly, most "brand X" bulbs, ballast's and HID kits are in fact name brand products, that have been either re-label and or repackaged by a second hand distributor and or company. Companies like OSRAM, and others sometimes over market an item, they cant sell and or move, and they're forced to liquidate these items at or below cost just to make ends meet. Another common liquidating practice is for products known as blems (short for blemished good), where there's been a branding / logo defect and or a cosmetic fault. These also often liquidated at or below cost.

This is where the "brand X" company comes into the picture and picks these items up dirt cheap, re-labels and or repackages them (as its cheaper for them to do so than manufacturer the good in whole) and they resell them.

The only problem that I see with brand X kits is the companies that distribute them are often a fly by night operation. Here one day, gone the next. So if a problem or question should arise, sometimes its difficult if not impossible to receive help.

The best thing for you to do is be a conscious shopper. See what kits people have, and see what people are paying for them. Make your decision NOT on the fact that it's a brand X label, but rather if the buyers are happy with their kits, and if it warrants the price they paid for it.

Re: good hid brand?

GG35, Do you have to buy the ballasts along with the ultinon's? Do our cars come with ballasts already? I know very little about HID, bulbs, ballasts, etc. Thanks.

Re: good hid brand?

If you have HID (High Intensity Discharge) lights, you most certainly have a ballast. What you may not have (in terms of an actual separate unit) is the ignitor which in some kits is built into the ballast and in others its a sperate stand alone unit. The pro's and cons to such a design are as follows - When the Ignitor is built into the ballast, you have one less unit to mount and or locate when you're installing an HID kit. For some who don't have much room to work with, this is a huge plus! On the flip side, if the ignitor goes dead on ya, you have no choice but to spend the big bucks on getting an integrated ballast unit. When the ignitor is a separate unit, if it goes bad on ya, you only have to shell out the $$$ for just the ignitor, which when compared to the cost of an integrated ballast unit is much much cheaper.

Re: good hid brand?

Be careful with 8KK HIDS, unless they are engineered well, they can put out as little as 50% of the visible lumens of lower temp. arc lamps. Even though they may look brighter, more blue, or more purple, that "cool" factor may be indeed compromising your night vision.

Re: good hid brand?

xenon,
6000K is pure white with a hint of purple, not blue. Philips has made, or is making a 5000K bulb that should be pure white with a touch of blue.
