the 2004 coupe manual states that infiniti recommends petroleum based oil. why does (almost) everyone here use synthetic???

Infiniti wants you to wear out your engine sooner so they can make another new car sale!

BTW, I just had Castrol Syntec put in by the dealer at 7500 with that service, that's when my dealer recommends switching.

you can use regular engine oil all throughout your engine's lifetime and not have problems. as long as you change regularly. synthetic oil gives you the luxury of changing much longer, say at 5K miles instead of 3500.

hell, i had a 99Si which revved up to 8K rpms several times a day, had it up to 90K miles before it was stolen, never tasted synthetic and had no problems.

Dino oil has additives to provide the multi-viscosity characteristics, which leave deposits on engine parts over a long period of time. If you plan to keep your car a long time, synthetic is probably a better choice. There is some pretty good info here:

Re: why synthetic if infiniti recommends dino?

7500 miles is the factory recommended cutover for synthetic...I can start a huge fight about this, but what Infiniti is getting at is they're not particularly enthused about people running non-SAE stuff like Amsoil.

Personally, I use Mobil1, and have been very happy with it through three different cars...

As far as a service interval extension...I would be leery of doing that regularly, even with synthetic...it's good, but it's not a miracle. You know how hard you push on the car, so you should have an idea of what service schedule to follow...checking your oil regularly is also a good indicator of how it's performing...as it breaks down, it darkens up...
