New G owner with Questions
Just picked up my 'somewhat' new G35c! For those interested, it's an 04, 6mt, DG on blk, prem and areo package, with a few other extras....
As the title suggests, I have a few questions... Before I start talking mods, I'm a newbie to buying used cars and have a few questions about the used car buying process. What do I need to do when purchasing a car from a private party? I've only purchased brand new from dealership before so I'm new to this title transfer and dmv process. I was wondering for CA, what steps I need to do to ensure complete owner transfer for my new G.
I looked on the cali dmv site and it says I have to make an appointment to go into the dmv. Is this true? I can't do everything electronically? More specifically, it says I have 10 days to notify the DMV but when I tried to get an appointment at my local DMV office, the first available date is like 3 weeks away?
Also, the dmv site says I need a smog certification. The previous owner says he doesn't have it. Do I have to get a smog check for a car that's basically new???
thanks in advance...

Re: New G owner with Questions
Are you buying the car in cash? If so, make sure that the title is clean no salvage written on it. If the title is coming from the bank of the original owner then it should be ok. No bank will finance a salvage title vehicle. One way to avoid the DMV is go to AAA club office provided you're a member they can process the registration in less time. Or, don't make an appointment just walk in the DMV get a number and wait for your number to be called. I suggest you get all your paperwork together before going so you only make one trip. And yes you do need to get a smog check because of the title transfer even if it's a new car. Very important to get this done before going because you will waste your trip to the DMV if you don't have it. Other than your name, home address and proof of sale I don't think you need anything else. Goodluck, I hope this info will help and congrats on the new car.

Re: New G owner with Questions
thanks for the feedback.... much appreciated
I did buy the car cash and the title is clean. I made sure of that before purchasing the car.
So, as long as I bring the necessary info and the following to a AAA DMV office:
the title,
the bill of sale,
the smog certification,
and check book,
I should be okay? Please verify!!!
thanks!
