Exchanged words with an M3 driver

We are both at the stop light windown down, sunroof open, cocky look on our faces. We look at each other and at the same time we say: Nice car... We both smiled as I game him the respect and took off more slowly than I normally do (in my I don't want to race you because you will dust me fashion) to allow him to go ahead <-I had to learn that manuvuer when I owned my MX6 and I would pull up beside Mustangs etc... He was trying to do the same thing for me. I guess that he doesn't realize that he would have toasted me off the line.

Re: Exchanged words with an M3 driver

Hahahha... funny stuff. I'm sure most (if not all) M3 owners know that they drive a pretty fast car. But in all reality, from a dead stop, you'd probably hang in there with him for longer than you'd think.

If you raced from 0-40 MPH and then let off, you'd probably be right there with him. I've seen similar stoplight races in traffic where the faster car can't really pull ahead of a slower car too much until the speeds start to get higher.....

I can't believe how wrong you are Hitman. M3 (SMG or no) is much faster than a 5AT coupe.

Re: Exchanged words with an M3 driver

My family owns an m3 and i've test driven the g35 coupe(6 speed), which i love by the way, but im' sorry an m3 would dust the g35 from any speed. By 40 mph the m3 would be in the lead by car lengths, 1st gear in the m3 is viciously fast. Again, I love the g35 but it just cant hang with an e46 m3.

Re: Exchanged words with an M3 driver

Okay, whatever.... I've seen it before. A car that performs like an M3 will NOT be very far at the beginning of the race. It will pull as away as speeds climb though... no doubt about that.

I'd love to see a breakdown of the times for both the M3 and G35 at these points:

0-10 mph
0-20 mph
0-30 mph
0-40 mph

I'd be willing to bet that the 0-10 and 0-20 times would be damn close. Total power doesn't matter much here, because neither car could use all of it's power. Those times are more of a result of tracion and driver skill, especially with a manual tranny.

I was watching a video of an M3 vs a 350Z just yesterday (street race), both cars supposedly stock, and the 350Z hung with the M3 in the first two gears. After that, the M3 started pulling away.

You guys are right to have respect for the M3, but don't get carried away, they're not all that.

BTW, I used to own one (an SMGII)

And one of my good friends has a modded SMG. Even stock his car killed mine from a launch when he uses launch control. Here's his car:

Re: Exchanged words with an M3 driver

well, i found some numbers from car and driver...

first numbers are test results, second are numbers at 40k miles.

Performance (new / 40,000):
Zero to 60 mph: 4.5 sec / 4.8 sec
Zero to 100 mph: 11.2 sec / 12.0 sec
Zero to 130 mph 20.1 sec / 21.2 sec
Street start, 5-60 mph 5.2 sec / 5.5 sec
Standing 1/4-mile 13.1 sec / 13.4 sec
@ 107 mph @ 105 mph
Braking, 70-0 mph 161 ft / 156 ft
Roadholding, 300-ft-dia skidpad 0.87 g / 0.88 g

Re: Exchanged words with an M3 driver

Look lads, I raced a Ferrari F40 once in my stock 04 sedan. He may have had a mile on me in first, but by God, in second I lessened that gap by about 9/10ths of a mile. By third he was in the next state, but i feel that If the wind had been different I could have taken him?
M3, M4, M5..M bop...whatever, I love my car, it's the bollocks, if I wanted an M3 I would have bought one.

Re: Exchanged words with an M3 driver

I have noticed most M3 drivers give the G respect. Most I have talked to would have bought a G if their budget were 10 grand or so less. It's the 3-series drivers that are less likely to give props. I've got a theory why, but I don't want to diss any 3-series drivers here.

Re: Exchanged words with an M3 driver

only chance in my opinion that G has against m3 is 5-60 start. i'v seen some stats for Gcoupe going 5-60 5.2 or 5.3 seconds. But besides that there is no chance.

Re: Exchanged words with an M3 driver

shoot, if the m3 were only 10k more I would have gotten one. I got vpp pricing on my 6mt with premium and a comparable m3 would have run me almost exactly 20K more. Even msrp to msrp, I was looking at 17K difference.

Regardless, the m3 will anihilate (spelling?) a coupe. The best times I've seen for each are 4.5 and 5.5 respectively. The worst times I've seen for each are 4.8 and 6.1. Taken in a light most favorable to the coupe with only a 1 second disparity, it would take another "one thousand one" after the m3 got to 60 before the G got there. That's an eternity in 0-60 times.

Re: Exchanged words with an M3 driver

I raced a new E46 M3. Well we didnt race but fooled around. He wanted to race but there wasnt a place due to traffic and lots of cops. We got a run in and it was in 3rd and we were dead even till about 100..

Im not dumb. I know they can kill us they have like 275 to the wheels.. But its nice to see a bad driver with a weak M3's face after he doesnt pull anywhere.. But for 13K more I hope its faster. But the I got 13K to put into the G.. Can you say TT

Re: Exchanged words with an M3 driver

Are there no G owners that had a choice to buy an M3 but opted to get a Gcoupe instead? This was the decision I made... sometimes I feel kind of stupid about it. But I like the overall styling of the coupe better...

Re: Exchanged words with an M3 driver

I had the ability to buy an M3...I just didn't think it was worth the extra cash. The G matches the M3 on handling and braking, it only suffers on straight-line performance, engine refinement and maybe interior quality. But factor in that the G has better reliability, softer ride, and more eye catching looks for 10-20k less and it was a no brainer for me.
