anyone experiment with different viscosities of oil?
i was wondering if anyone who has a mild oil consumption problem (0.5-1qt between oil changes) have used thicker viscosities of oil such as 0W-40, 10W-40, 15W-50. on the other hand, has anyone here tried 0W-30 or the like and gotten better fuel mileage/performance? i only ask because i noticed my local walmart is starting to sell different 5qt mobil 1 viscosities like 10W-40, 0W-30, and started restocking 15W-50. these are the regular synthetics not the "extended performance" line. i figured the 10W-40 would help higher mileage motors or motors that run harder for extended periods of time. 0W-30 would increase fuel economy. i think the bottle even said it's compatible with motors that normally require 5W-30 such as our cars. i do know german castrol 0W-30 would be a perfect candidate for that. then i was pleasantly surprised to see the red bottles of 15W-50 in 5qt containers being sold again.i used to use this on my SR20DET powered S13 during summer drift season. i think it's been nearly two years since i last saw it stocked in quantity at my local walmart. any thoughts on experimenting with different viscosities? i was thinking of experimenting with 0W-40 or 10W-40 to try to help with my slight oil consumption.

The viscosities are not going to stop oil comsumption. The first number is the weight of the oil cold, example 05W-30W. Its thinner weight at start up for better lubrication of the components. After warm up the viscosity of the oil is then 30W.
So, running a higher viscosity oil will not really help in stopping the oil consumption, if anything it will take away from the lubrication tendencies if you go with a higher weight or straight weight oil. Unless your running the car hard in higher temperatures, stick with the recommended oil from Infiniti.
