down shifting response laging..
down shifting response laging..
I seem to be having trouble with my G35 Auto with down shifting. If I throw it over in the phony manual mode as I cruise up to a red light when its in 4th and click down, it often takes several clicks to get it to down shift. I thought maybee it was being smart and not letting me downshift when going to fast, but that doesnt seem to be the case. Sometimes it will shift down and other times it don't, and I have to hit the break a lot harder cause it never made the shift. All this trouble to avoid a little break dust on my clean wheels. hehe.
So, is this the way it typically behaves? Or is it just my new G.
Thanks.

The TCU will prevent you from downshifting too 'far', thus preventing over-reving. Your ride is fine.

Re: down shifting response laging..
That very well could be the problem. If ehren is going 65 and trying to downshift into 2nd.
However, I had the same problem on my sedan. I would put it into the gear limiter mode (describing it as a manumatic is incorrect IMO), try to downshift, and I could see the display change from 4 to 3 and then jump back very quickly. It didn't downshift even though I was well in the RPM range for 3rd gear. I would wait another second, try again, and then it would downshift even though my speed had not changed.
There was a thread on this a while ago. Someone actually got his ecu reflashed because of the same 'problem' and noted that it actually got worse after the reflash.

What about upshifting? When I shift from 1st to 2nd it seems to take too long. I scared to rev too high as I'll probably end up way over the red line before it decides to shift????

Re: down shifting response laging..
I think it's because the 'manumatic' is a gear limiter. When you upshift from 1st to 2nd, the ecu decides which gear is appropriate based on your throttle position, and previous driving habits. If you have selected 3rd gear, the computer will decide which of the first 3 gears is most appropriate, etc.
I think that they might have changed this with later models, but my early build 03 sedan's 'manumatic' was just a gear limiter.

Re: down shifting response laging..
Yeah. this seems to be what I've experienced. But I dont see the LED display change. I'm like hey, I told to you to go to 3rd. If I hit a second time right away, it will shift. But that makes me hesitant not wanting to put it into 2nd. And I'm still traveling the same speed. It just seems generally inconsistant. I'll search for the old thread.
Re: down shifting response laging..
I've got an 04 coupe. It always allows me to go into 2nd...but it takes too long and seems to be inconsistant. Sometimes when I hit the shifter is shifts quickly and sometimes slowly (majority of the time).

One thing to keep in mind in reading the previous posts is that the MM mode works differently in the sedan vs. the coupe. So what one experiences will be different.
I have a'03 coupe and the MM seems to do just what I tell it to do. Sometimes there is a slight lag as others have mentioned and the infamous 2-1 downshift clunk. Otherwise it seems to work great.

I have an 03 coupe and MM works fine 98% of the time. There is a slight lag that rarely ever happens. And the 3rd to 2nd / 2nd to 1st problem can be avoided if you keep your foot on the throttle all the way through.

"When I shift from 1st to 2nd it seems to take too long"
I can explain this...
what's your throttle position when you upshift to 2nd(how hard you press gas pedal)?
I played with MM a lot today and i noticed few things...
1. how fast gear change is depends on "HOW HARD YOU PRESS GAS PEDAL(thanks to the drive by wire)".. if i press very lightly and upshift, tranny upshifts really slowly yet very smoothly... however, when i'm at 1/2 to full throttle, it shifts very quick yet jerky(sacrifice smoothness for a quick shift is a "must thing to give up"
...
2. when double downshifting(5th to 3rd), tranny won't downshift to 3rd from 5th if i press gas pedal 1/2 to full throttle, it will only downshift to 4th.. however, if i press gas pedal "LIGHTLY" and try to double downshift, it will double downshift as i commend...
and just FYI, max speed for each gear are(upshift at 6800 right b4 fuel cut off):
1st: 45ish(but you can't downshift to 1st from 40mph or above)
2nd: 65ish(but again can't downshift to 2nd from 60mph or above)
3rd: 95ish(but once again can't downshift to 3rd from 90mph or above)
4th: don't need to explain this, goes up to our limited gov speed
5th: ...
hope this helps a bit...

Re: down shifting response laging..
this is the most consistant solution that I have found. The man mode is cool when there is a throttle command. It usually shifts really zippy under full acceleration yet is crap slow when trying to coast and downshift at lights. My solution was to accelerate a tiny bit before grabbing the lower gear. This is rough though on passengers (and me!) because the last thing I want to do is speed up right before slowing down. Basically the trouble seems ot be shifting while at low RPM (like coasting to a stop). I suspect it has to do with throttle matching so the shift is smoother. Regardless, I decided that brakes would go to the ceramics someone else mentioned to save me from the hassle of dust, and that will probably be cheaper than constantly downshifting.
good luck,
