Whining noise on startup (6MT)

I just hit 7K miles in my 6MT, but this is something that really annoys me--every time I start the car, I hear an annoying whining noise (seems to be worse, the colder the engine is) and it gets louder as I take it out of whatever gear I'm parked in and release the clutch. I read something about it possibly being the "sychros" (whatever those are) in the tranny and that it might be normal, but I just wanted to make sure this is isn't something I should be concerned about. It definitely does not "sound" normal though. Please note: this car is stock (no aftermarket intake, etc.). Thanks.
