What got you out of a citation was being nice and having respect instead of an attitude. Cops get lied to all the time, and they know it. It's hard to fake friendliness and a respect, and they know that too.

You'd be surprised how much cops respect your honesty. I had a cop pull me over when I was younger (and dumber) and asked me if I knew how fast I was going. I said, "officer, I couldn't tell you, the road was empty and I didn't pay a lot of attention to the speed limit, I don't think I was driving erratically." He took my license and reg, came back to my car and gave me a warning. I didn't have to lie about it and he respected that, I'm sure.
