Does anyone NOT get oil changes at the dealer?

I've gone to the dealership for my 2 oil changes so far. While I don't plan to start going to Jiffy Lube for oil changes, I kind of wonder if anyone does. Is there any reason not to go to a non-Infiniti joint for oil changes?

Re: Does anyone NOT get oil changes at the dealer?

I'd love to do oil changes myself if it's not possible for me to mess anything up. I recently bought ramps so I guess I should be able to use them to change oil. I do think I'm a tad too fat to get under the car with enough room though. I used the ramps to install the transmission grounding wire and the bottom of the car basically is right at my chest when I climbed under it.

I could care less where I get my oil changed as long as someone else does it for me, AND I get to watch them in the process. Why get my hands dirty? That's what minimum wage people are for.

Why get your hands dirty??

The same reason that you buy a 40K car when you could walk.

Because you love well made machines.

A little spit on my burger, I can deal with. People FN with my car? I don't think so.

I do my own because I have the facilities to do so and I enjoy it.
But I wouldn't be shy about going to a Jiffy Lube for service. Just watch them and double check everything like Gdupg35 suggests. Same as if I got the dealer to do it.

Re: Does anyone NOT get oil changes at the dealer?

I took one of my previous cars to a local oil-change joint and met with the most incredible incompetence. They were unable to get the old filter off. They mangled the crap out of the old filter, putting holes in it -- but left the old filter on since they could not get it off. I didn't discover this until I got home and saw pools of leaking oil. I was FURIOUS. Since then, I've done all oil changes myself. I always use a new drain crush washer and a good beam-type torque wrench. There is just no possible way I'm going to trust my wife's new G to some monkey. I don't trust the dealer, either.

As said above, nobody will care for your car like you do.

Why change your own oil? The same reason nobody washes the car but me. Nobody waxes the car but me. It's your baby, don't you wanna take care of it?

Re: Does anyone NOT get oil changes at the dealer?

I take the G to my friends new Valvoline store. I helped open it for him a few years ago and can really trust the service (heck I've know the guy forever!) Love the oil too and I know they will do it right. I do oil changes on the Charger myself since that car dosent get driven that much. Never will take the car to a dealer for more than major service or warranty work. Every dealer I go to is full of idiots that have messed something up along the line. Had too many bad things happen at dealers. And the fact they always try to tack on some extra unneeded service while your in there.

Ok. So what is all needed for the oil change. Not being Incompetent, but what are some examples of what everyone is using? Filter type? Oil type and grade? anything work better than the factory weight? what size of wrenches, pans, ramps? Someone mind explaining Oil Change 101? =)

It's not incompetence, it's merely lack of experience.

There's a pretty decent how-to in the FAQ section:
