6MT VS. AT
6MT VS. AT
Is the automatic half as fun as the 6MT? Which one should I get? I won't be able to test out either one of them, and I plan on learning manual with the car I buy.
Any significant flaws on either one of the cars? I live in Miami, where there is a lot of traffic.

Re: 6MT VS. AT
I have a 6MT and have driven mostly autos for the last 12 years or so. I'd definitely say a manual is more work, but it's also more fun. If you drive in stop and go traffic, it would probably be a pain. For me, that's not an issue, so I enjoy the 6-speed.

Re: 6MT VS. AT
haha, good comparison,
i'd say that Fun is a relative term, depending on age and personal preference, the younger you are, the more likely you will think Manual trans is "fun" and "sporty"
there are always exceptions of course, but you gotta think about the traffic and your every-day driving, maybe the Auto is better for you since you do not know how to drive stick, and are involved in heavy traffic.
Both are going to be fun-to-drive nonetheless!!!! so good luck with your choice, you cant go wrong dude
p.s. dont forget.....the Auto comes with Manu-matic mode where you can select the gear that you specifically want.....i think you should try to test drive, at any cost!

Re: 6MT VS. AT
i dont understand how someone would buy a car without testing it out...its like buying a pair of jeans because they say "Levis" on them, but when you put them on you realize you got the wrong size and you already took the tags off and cant return it.
What im saying is: DRIVE THE CAR BEFORE YOU BUY IT!!! If your dealership isnt letting you, then go to a different dealership. You should not have a problem testing the Auto coupe, there are plenty of them in dealer's inventories

I would say that:
fast car + RWD + first time driving manual = higher accident potential
however, the coupe has good safety features that help you from losing control. I'd suggest:
1. Have a good instructor teach you how to drive stick.
2. Learn to RPM match when skipping gears when downshifting (eg. 5th to 3rd).
3. Consider taking a beginner's racing course
and you should be all right. Driving manual can be a blast...everyone should try it at least once.

Re: 6MT VS. AT
The manual shift mode of the automatic is SO much fun, it really makes the car for me. Once you learn (it doesn't take long) how to maximize the manual mode, you may wonder why you would want a manual only tranny. It really is the best of both worlds, because when you just want to cruise or stuck in traffic, putting her in full auto mode is a wonderful thing.
Make sure you get the sport package with the auto so that you get the LSD.
Also, if you have driven or read reviews on the G35 sedan auto, don't compare that to the coupe. The trannys are programmed and act totally different.
IMHO, unless you just love a manual trans, love to practice heel-and-toe shifting, autocross, or just want the absolute quickest G35 (note assuming the manual driver is good), try the auto and see if you don't love the manual mode.
The only other advantage to the 6MT is the Brembos. Again, I think the only time you would see the difference is on the track.

oh my SHIot that sucks. I wonder how much damage the car got? Frisco does have some steep hills, but nothing the ebrake can't handle.
every beginner needs to learn the ebrake technique for stopping on steep inclines.

No word on damage, but that has spread on several different boards pretty damn quickly. If that guy is part of any forum, he probably has seen himself by now .

i've got an auto and don't mind it. wish i had a manual, but, eh, not much I can do- my parents were like "you're getting an auto, manuals are bad because they break all the time and junk". Btw, and before you lecture me on how manuals arn't bad and don't beak all the time, my dad knows nothing about cars, so i just have to sit and smile through his ignorence (And god forbid i try to correct him, then i hear about the younger generation not knowing anything, lol)

If they're contributing money, then yes, shutup and smile.
My high school car was an '83 Ford Crown Victoria, two-tone brown and beige, with a brown interior. Woohoo! 5.0L V8 with a whopping 130hp! 0-60 in about 13 seconds! 12mpg (16 highway)! About the only plus was that I could fit your coupe in the trunk.
If I were you, I wouldn't complain about the lack of a manual. G35's are quite fun to drive with an automatic.
Oh, and on a side note, this wouldn't have happened with a manual: A warning to all current and future G35 owners

Re: 6MT VS. AT
Thanks for all the replies. The thing is I'm only 15 and I'm getting the G on my 16th birthday. None of the dealers will let anyone without a license, operate their vehicles. I've been to two dealers in my area and they have absolutely no coupes in stock. No manuals or automatics. You guys think I can learn driving manual from "trial and error" on the G. I pretty much know what to do, I need to put it into effect. Any feedback would be appreciated.
Re: 6MT VS. AT
lucky bastard, i only got a mustang gt for my 16th b-day, then another mutang for graduating hs, and now my G for almost finishing college
