I Found My Rev-limiter...By Mistake
I Found My Rev-limiter...By Mistake
If you can imagine being on a road shaped like a stretched, letter "S", and having a signal at it's midpoint. At the top of the "S" both lanes bottle-neck into one. So here's what happened;
Driving to work yesterday morning, I'm in the slow lane approaching that signal, which is changing to Red. I notice a 1994 Accord flying up the hill in the fast lane on my left. We are side by side, probably 10mph, when it changes back to Green. Now, being proud of my MM skills, I was already in 2 before the light changed to Green. We both go, but I didn't. I'm like, WTF? I went to the floor, and the G was pulling like my old 87 Tercel 1.5. I have a 20oz coffee in my left hand, my right hand is turning the steering wheel, and not going anywhere fast. I quickly downshifted to 1, felt the rpm's come up, and hit the shifter into 2, but it didn't shift up.
All of this was going on so fast, as well as trying to keep the car in the lane with one hand. I guess I hit the rev-limiter because the G just started bucking like a horse. I hit the shifter immediately again, and this time it worked, and was able to get in front of the Accord at the top of the hill.
I checked the G over when I got to work. I didn't break anything, and I'm not leaking anything. I just don't know why it didn't shift up. Sorry for the long story, but that's the first time anything like that has ever happened to me in the G.

Re: I Found My Rev-limiter...By Mistake
No worries, your rev limiter is there as a safety precaution. The rev limiter is the highest point the engine will rev safely, set by the manufacturer. Curious as to why the car didn't listen to you on the first upshift try to 2nd, though. Were you still applying power to the accelerator when you told the car to upshift? Perhaps try to treat it like a manual and accelerate in 1st, let off the gas & push up to shift, and then once your'e in 2nd, apply the gas again.

I think, maybe, it's because my G has a feminine personality. I think that was her way of telling me that she didn't appreciate all that was going on.
