Re: Just Wondering > G35 Coupe AT vs 2004 TL

hahaha, i think he confused the CL and the TL.
only thing is that there is no more CL in the acura line.

i think TL is more practical use with a hot looking interior.
whereas the g35 is more for power and sportiness with a hot looking exterior.
i was trying to decide between the two before i bought my g35. i decided i'll go for practicality later on. also, knowing how well the TL sells, everyone will have it in a few months...wait, everyone already does.

The TL's a damn fine sports sedan, but the G's an all-round better car IMO.

On the plus side, the TL is a good-looker with a nice interior (...maybe nicer than the G's??) with a top-notch voice-recognition nav system that I wish we had.

On the minus side, the TL weighs 50 pounds more than the G and has 10 hp less... so you can add about one second to the 0-60 time, and several car lengths in a quarter mile.

Not to mention it's FF -- not FR like the G. Due to weight transfer problems with FF, those cars simply cannot match FR for performance.

I like the blue gauges in the TL and the voice-recognition...

0-60 times aren't that far apart. If the g35 driver messes up on the launch, the TL could actually take him early on...then the g35 should start walking away in higher speeds...this is only if the g35 messes up on the launch and the TL gets a perfect launch. However, FWD....hard to get perfect launches so yeah. Btw, handling...g35 easily takes the TL.

True...
Acura claims a 0-60 of 6.5 seconds for the TL, so the G should take it... but like you said, only if the G35 doesn't mess up the launch... :-O
But for a heavier FF (FWD) car with less hp, I doubt the TL would otherwise have any kind of jump on the G... ;-)

Physics also favors the G... when coming off the line and during acceleration, where there's always weight transfer to the back of the car.

In the G's case, that means extra weight shifts over the rear drive wheels to give extra grip. In the TL's case, the weight shifts to the back and actually lightens the load over the front drive wheels... hence a FR (RWD) car like the G generally has better off-the-line performance than a FF (FWD) car like the TL.

Re: Just Wondering > G35 Coupe AT vs 2004 TL

I do think the G35 Coupe and TL are a fair comparison. They're both sporty luxury cars in the ~33k-ish price range. A friend of mine got a TL, it's really awesome. If you're looking for luxury features, the G can't touch the TL. Voice activated nav, bluetooth phone integration, and DVD audio, and all sorts of other bells & whistles.

But, it's just not the hot looking, distinctive sports coupe that the G is. As much as I liked the gee-whiz factor, it didn't really make me want to trade in my G. It did make me think Nissan could have took the G's features up one notch though. It's a really tough call - I wouldn't really say one's better than the other. They've got different strengths. I don't think you'd go wrong with either one.

Re: Just Wondering > G35 Coupe AT vs 2004 TL

Hey neohh,
I never really said (anywhere) that an auto g35 driver could mess up the launch. I think I was just responding to kwakman's comment... and I took him to mean a 6MT driver who shifted poorly. The bad lauches I've seen with 6MT's usually involve weak revs when the clutch is dropped so the tires don't spin whatsoever.

But you never know! Could be some old geezer in an auto with Alzheimer's and he confuses the gas with the brake, lol.
But other than that...yeah, I'd agree with you that it would be unlikely to mess up a launch with auto --unless maybe forgetting to shut off VDC.

Re: Just Wondering > G35 Coupe AT vs 2004 TL

I agree that the TL and the G35C are pretty much apples and oranges. The G coupe is for all intents and purposes a true sports car even though it has a (minimal) back seat. The TL is a FWD sporty sedan. If you care most about sports car performance, forget the TL and get the G. If you care most about luxury features and practicality, then vice-versa. Both cars have plenty of power so that distinction in itself is not particularly meaningful.

My brother bought a TL last fall, partly on my recommendation, since his preference is for just that kind of car (sporty sedan, FWD snow traction, features galore, good power and build quality). His last car was an Audi A6, and the TL seemed like a nice change of pace, with more cool stuff in many ways, for a lot less money. He's very happy with the car still after 6 months, and has had no problems with it.

Here's a thread containing some side by side pics of his car (the first time I saw/drove it) and mine, along with some comments about how they compared:
