As for oil filters, avoid anything made by Honeywell (FRAM, Penzoil, and many others) and you'd be alright. Look for the name printed over and over again in the fine print on one or more sides of the box.

The funny thing is at operating temperature that 0W30 is IDENTICAL to the 5W30 so all you're doing with that oil is giving your engine an easier time starting in EXTREME Cold as 0W oil can retain pumpability all the way to -35*C. 10w30/5w30/15w30/0w30 oils will ALL be the same viscosity at 100*F. Learning more about oil and what the numbers ACTUALLY mean is one of the first things anyone that is doing their own oil change should do. The first number is the "Winter rating" of the oil and how well it will do when the temperature drops below normal on initial startup. As long as it says 30 at the end it's still the exact same viscosity so any "performance/efficiency" gain is mostly in your head.

If you were to read an oil out loud the correct way you would say "Five Winter Thirty" for 5W30. The 'w' quite literally means winter.

I can vouch for Castrol syntec 0W-30 European formula. Only place i have seen it is at autozone but rumors say they will stop carrying that oil in the future.

I've used straight oil, synthetic oil (both being 5W-30), OEM filters, expensive aftermarket filters, cheap aftermarket filters, etc. I never notice any difference. Over the week-end I dropped in a Fram PH6607 Extra-Guard oil filter and five quarts of Mobil 1 5W-30 Fully Synthetic and again no difference (drove about 180 miles today for work).

I just want to state that while aftermarket oil filters and aftermarket oils claim to last for thousands of miles longer than our 3,750 intervals, almost every oil filter box (especially the Mobil 1 Extended Performance filters) have a little note which states "Always follow the vehicle manufacturer's recommended oil & filter change intervals."

Try it... it's pretty clean oil, my oil barely changes color. When I switched from royal purple to eneos. I seafoamed the car then changed it with regular 5w30 ran the motor for 15 mins. Then changed it out with Eneos... http://www.eneos.us/products.php?pk=7

The only way to really tell what oil is best is do an UOA (Used Oil Analysis)
Royal Purple shears a lot in our VQ's. It's crap for what it costs.

In regards to German Castrol. I read it is no longer sold or will no longer be sold in the U.S. I was at Autozone a couple days ago and saw that Castrol had a European Formula. I don't know if it's the same as German Castrol but everytime I have been at an Autozone, I have yet to see German Castrol on their shelves.

The German Castrol actual name is: Castrol Syntec 0W-30 and says "European Formula" right on the front. To ensure it is the right stuff, look on the back for "Made in germany".

I haven't tried to buy any German Castrol in a while because I have about 120 bottles of it at my house right now already, just in case they stop selling it. But the last time I checked, my local auto zone was still selling the stuff.

Agree (with your pix) Castrol Syntec 0W-30 has proven very well in our VQ's. Just can't find on shelves anymore in my neck of the woods.

General comment to all else....
The higher end cost exotic oils don't always mean it's the best for our VQ's, though some work very well while others don't.
I won't continue to mention those that don't, as not to add injury to insult to some here.
Manufactures are always changing their formulas and add-packs. UOA's FTW!!

Were you able to buy cases of the oil from autozone?

Yep... I bought all my stock of the stuff from my local AutoZone. I might be going to Taco Bell for lunch today.. and it just happens to be across the street from my Auto-Zone. If my lunch buddies don't mind, I'll try to swing in real quick and see if they still sell it around here and let you guys know for sure.
