Rear End Whine at High Speed

I have noticed over the past 4 months or so that my car has developed a loud whine when going above 50 or so. You can hear it best at 60mph. I'm also having tranny problems so that could be the issue but I think it could possibly be the diff. Has anyone else experienced this or have any advice?

Thanks
-B

Could be your differential going.

One thing i forgot to mention was that I hear the noise regardless of whether the car is in gear or not (ie: if I engage the clutch i still hear the same noise). That doesn't necessarily mean it's not the transmission though. I'll have to do some troubleshooting this weekend.

No vibration, probably is the bearings. Sometime in the next month i will replace the bearings and see if that make a difference. I'll let you know...

Did changing the bearings fix it? I'm having a similar issue, most noticable around 70MPH.

Any updates on this? My warranty is about to expire and I would like to bring this to the attention of a dealer in case it is a sign of something more serious. I have a 2006 6MT and the whine is most noticeable at higher speeds. If I put the tranny in neutral, the sound goes away, but even in neutral, if I rev the engine the whine comes back. Sounds electrical, like it could be the alternator/AC compressor or something dependent on engine speed rather than vehicle speed (like a diff, wheels, etc.). Not a serious issue, but it's annoying as hell on long drives and I want to ensure it's not going to become a severe problem.
