Got my car keyed

My car got keyed up pretty bad a little bit ago. Needless to say, I was a bit pissed (as any of you can understand). There's about 7-8 scratches on the whole car - almost all the body panels. None of them are very deep, but many go throught the paint and clearcoat where you can see the primer. Some are a couple of inches and the longest is about 10 inches.

Since there was so much of this, I claimed it on my insurance under my comprehensive. I went and got an estimate yestarday and it comes out to about $2,600 of damage.

Anyway, the body shop that was recommended by my dealer looked it over and said it would be about 10 days to fix. I asked him how they would go about fixing this. He mentioned they remove panels and then use factory paint over the scratch. They said they have to also paint the adjacent panel to "blend" it in. Then when the panels are done, they clearcoat the whole panel.

Has anyone had this done before? Or, more importantly, what were your results? I'm surprised that the process of fixing these scratches is so intensive.. The last thing I want is for my paint not to match up.

Re: Got my car keyed

Yes ive had this done and know a good amount about it my uncle is in he body shop business. make sure the shop has a good rep if they dont color match exact it will show bad on the TB and i dont think they need to take the panels off depending on where the scratches are. should just be a lite sanding and blend... Try to have them not blend too much though. like fenders and hood honestly paint the whole thing! but like your quarters make sure they blend in the pealars.

(I dont know how ballsy you are but see if you ca find someone who knows a body shop well you an have them give you a higher est and then they give you the cash fomr the insurence check to do mods) hehehehe justa thought or get your deducable back at least

I hate people like that. If you have a problem with somebody, deal with the person. Leave the cars out of it!!!! I had no idea that it was that expensive to fix scratches. Hopefully you won't notice the difference when you get it back, epecially if it's costing $2600.

I'm a little suprised $2,600. sounds a little on the low side to me. Based on you description I would have guessed $3000. to $3,500. to fix/repair/repaint.

I feel your pain man. My car was keyed twice in the same damn week. I'm in the process of shopping around for the best shop right now.

Estimates are ranging from $400-600 for the repairs. Mine are not nearly as extensive as yours.

Good luck on the repaint...

Are you guys taking up two parking spaces or something?? Granted, I know the G deserves two but I get pissed when a car does that and keying comes to my mind although I always respect the rule of "do onto others....".

Re: Got my car keyed

I have a long time friend who works at a GM dealer. He told me that most of the time they just replace the entire panel with a new one. I don't know if there is a real color difference but from what he told me its cheaper/easier and then they get to keep the insurance money.

Re: Got my car keyed

When I went to pick up the Coupe at the dealer, they pointed out a LARGE chip in the hood. It went all the way down to the metal and was about half an inch long and about an eighth of an inch wide. They told me it probably happened in transit and that they would fix it.

The fix, from what they told me, was to strip the clearcoat, fill the chip, repaint the general area, followed by reapplying clearcoat over the entire hood.

To this day, I could not tell you where that chip was. If I hadn't seen it myself, I would have never known. The paint matching was absolutlely perfect (I'm twilight blue).

I'm sure a good body/paint shop can return you to your former glory.

I never double park. I just park really far away from other cars. I hope the person that did that to my car loses thier genitals in a horrible chainsaw accident...

Damn...sorry to hear about ur car, some people just don't respect other's property...its really sad. Well normally a good garage should be able to color code the panels and match it with the scratched part. If ur in SoCal I can recommend some good places to go to.

Re: Got my car keyed

my car was keyed 2 weeks after i got it... like yours, they **** keyed everysingle part of my car (hood, trunk, doors, fenders 1/4 panels)... i think the total came out to be $3400... since it was keyed to the metal, they had to "water sand" it down and repaint the panels (my case, whole car was repainted) it came out pretty good... just like fresh paint on a new car... you need to get a good shop tho... dont presure them to finish it as soon as possible... let them take their time...

Re: Got my car keyed

just got keyed on friday night at a diner. Part that pissed me off is that we just went in, ate, came out, and left. Didn't do anything to deserve it. So basically it was some fck that saw a nice car, was jealous that he is too stupid to get a decent paying job to buy one himself and keyed it.

Keying by far pisses me off more than anything else. If I see a nice car, I go check it out to see how sweet it is. What the hell possesses someone to see and nice car and think "hey nice car, let me go fck it up".

I've started a movement with me and my friends and tell them to spread it to all of their friends. Basically anytime you hear someone talk about keying a car, even if it is your friend, you punch him/her, preferably in the face. Lord knows they deserve it.

Re: Got my car keyed

my whole passenger side got keyed including the trunk and hood...Ivory Pearl tri coat paint is one of the hardest colors to match. The bodyshop had to paint it twice because it was so off the first time. He had to repaint the front bumper and blend it in the drivers side fender so it will flow better. make sure they blend or repaint the bumpers because it is really noticeable if the paint is off..

damn haters man!
