gas milage on mt coupe

i got my coupe like 8 or 9 days ago and it had 50 miles on it when i got it. I have put about 600 more on her. I was expecting pretty poor milage at first cause i have read that on new cars that the gas milage will be poor. I was wondering if what i sohuld be getting right now with 650 miles on my car. My last tank of gas lasted for 265 miles which is 13.25 miles/gallon (just so u dont have to bust out a calculator). That tank got me up to about 560 miles.... so it was from about 300 miles till 560 that my last tank lasted. I was wondering if this is about right.... or what for a new car. When can i expect to get a little more gas effecientcy outa my car? I also had a question about driving.... this is my first car in a stick (i drove a '93 suburban for about a year with 195k miles on it ) when im just cruising, what should i keep my revs around? I know that lower revs in a higher gear will yield a little better effecientcy, but my friend said that if i rev too low its hard on the car. Ive been staying around 3k and if shifting ive been shifting around 3-3.5k for just runnin around town and stuff. thanks for the feedback in advance

The mileage should improve, yes. Uhh, the urge to let the rpms grace 5-6k will decrease your MPG, this is true as well. You can let it run at a lower rpm than 3k. Going 40 mph in 6th gear might be bad, but running 2-2.5k rpm's in the town shouldn't be bad.

i dont usually shift over 3k. makes me feel like i'm wasting gas, when gas costs almost 2.60/gal now.
i usually get 330-360 miles/tank with mixed city/hwy driving.

I'm not sure how you guys are getting such poor mileage or if you're just computing it wrong. I drive mostly freeway, but I tend to drive pretty aggressive (although not often WOT). I average around 20 mpg. I figure this out by dividing my miles as reported by the trip computer by the gallons needed to fill as reported by the gas station. I have about 4000 miles on my car. I will note that the gas level meter isn't accurate in that the half way mark doesn't mean you're half empty. I believe when you hit empty, you still have 3 or 5 gallons left.

What earthly difference does it make if the gas gauge is inaccurate? MPG is calculated by dividing the miles traveled since the last fillup by the volume of the current fill up. The amount of gas remaining in the tank has nothing whatsoever to do with this calculation.

the way you computed the 13.25 mpg means that you must have driven until your car was out of gas and you stalled the engine... i hope you didn't do this cause its really bad for the car! yoiu probably only used 17 gallons, which computes to 15.6mpg... which is what i average. i drove very conservatively on a tank and got 18.6 mpg... highway and lots of city driving...

Re: gas milage on mt coupe

i calculate my mpg by filling up, and setting the odometer to 0.
then on my next fill up, i see how many gallons i put in, and divide by the miles i ran.
i think that's the only accurate way to get your mpg.

The topic has been done to death (do a search), but yes, the mileage does improve a lot after break-in. At about 9K miles I get about 25 MPG (indicated on the Nav which may be slightly optimistic) in relaxed, mostly highway driving. When the car was new, I got about 17 under similar circumstances.

Not here! I'm still getting only 15-16 mpg and I'm at 9k miles now and not driving much more agressive than during break-in. I usually shift between 3k and 3.5k also. Granted, it's mostly city driving and I make a lot of short trips, but still, my mileage has hardly improved at all. Obviously, I'm p*ssed because these gas prices are killing me, but I guess that's the price you pay for a fast car (I keep telling myself).

Re: gas milage on mt coupe

i get about 340miles average on one tank. i drive it pretty conservitively but I push it time to time. I shift around 3500 usually. I think that's pretty good milage. I want to see what I get with AC on all the time. I'm at 390 and a quarter tank to go.

if you're at the line between empty and half, then you're a little less than 1/4 tank left... if you really look at it, its not really 1/4, but more like 1/5...

Re: gas milage on mt coupe

23-24 mi/gal pretty consistently.
About 10% city, 90% highway. No, I don't drive like a *****. Usually cruise around 80-95 mph.
I'm real happy with that coz my wife's CRV FWD runs for 22 mi/gal.
