Me vs. STi neck to neck

from a roll he managed to slow down enough for me to meet him at a red light. I took the left lane he took the right. I figured if it was a race from the line i'd get smoked plus i was kind of scared to get my *** handed to me by this punk to tell you the truth. So I eased on the gas as the light went green, he jumped but slowed down to let me catch up a little. From a 15mph roll he started to speed up as did I. I was in MM with VDC on. In 3rd I pulled on him slightly but as soon as I hit 4th he evened it out.

It was dead even......it was almost like a stand still. We raced till about 90 and then I had to let off because I had to get on the highway. I was suprised....does someone care to explain??

That is totally impossible for you to be neck to neck with him unless he doesnt know how to drive stick well. I raced an sti and he killed me by a few cars.....EACH TIME! The person you raced doesnt know how to launch or shift well.

Re: Me vs. STi neck to neck

I think that the key point to remember here is that it was from a roll. From a standstill, the sti will eat us alive if the driver is halfway decent because of the extra traction they get. However, from a roll, that advantage goes away and becomes a burden because of the increased driveline losses inherent in an AWD car. I don't know what the commonly accepted driveline losses are for an STI but I would guess that it is somewhere between 20 and 25%.

Hahaha. A STi and me were neck in neck too the other day. The driver was some REALLY old guy, not your typical STi driver! We were neck in neck 40mph in a 40mph zone cuz there was cops trailing us. =)

Re: Me vs. STi neck to neck

I know he was gunning it too. We were up to 90mph in a 40mpg. No forced induction here, the driver looked about my age (23). It was from a rolling start, I wouldn't have taken him from the line because I knew better.

It was amazing how close we were...like I said almost like a stand still...kind of like we werent moving.

For those calling bullshit eat a dick. Why would I need to bullshit??? I don't race my car or take pride in making it faster.... I wouldn't have bought the G if I did.It gets me from point A to point B. There are a trillion cars out there faster and better looking than my car. I have no need to make it seem better.

Re: Me vs. STi neck to neck

from a roll an sti should eat you. i'm saying should, because the car is physically faster; if the driver can't drive, then anyone can win.

while awd is a great launching platform, i think you guys put too much stock in "from a roll an evos/stis are not that fast." awd drivetrain loss is not as huge as you guys make it out to be; evos still put down 230-240/250-260 hp/tq. the sti puts down 250-260/260-270 hp/tq. a 350z with track package puts down 250-ish/240-ish hp/tq.

a 350z gets through 30-70 in 5.3 seconds i believe. an evo does it in 5 flat. 30-70 for the sti is 4.5 seconds.

Re: Me vs. STi neck to neck

sixone - i didnt see the rolling start part. All the races i had were from launch. Even if it was from a rolling start, the sti should still be able to pull on us. I rarely ever put the G down, but i know for a fact that our cars have no real chance of winning against an STI or EVO. I mean...if we barely have a chance against an m3, what more if its an sti or evo. I think we can keep up...like not get dusted, but i don't think we would be even unless the STI driver doesnt drive stick well.

Re: Me vs. STi neck to neck

uhm....M3's are highway monsters and have a significant amount of hp more than the sti/evo/g35. The G35 would have a much easier chance against the sti and even more of a chance against an Evo from a roll.

Re: Me vs. STi neck to neck

In the best motoring video I was amazed that the STI could not pull on the Skyline in the straight aways.
Oftentimes people put a little too much stock in acceleration "times" the more accurate measure is how fast a car can move a certain distance.
I'm not saying that the G SHOULD be faster or even keep up, however you have to consider that in a turbo powered engine that it takes time for the turbo to spool, thus the STI or EVO may get from 30 to 70 quicker, but the G may get from 30 to 40 quicker or perhaps at the same time and then the STI may eventually be going faster and have to run down the G. While this is occuring the G is moving slower but is still ahead. <- all of this is just a hypothetical...

An example of this is when I had my 1990 Prelude. I raced a 280 ZX Turbo. It's listed 0 - 60 was 7.3 and my Prelude at the time was 7.9. In 3 attempts I beat him each time up to @ 25 or 30 MPH. At that speed he started to catch up and at 60 he was only in front of me my only half of his car but he kept pulling hard.

Anyway.. good "survival"(not realy a kill, not really a death)
