That's not what other drivers think when the OBNOXIOUS sound comes from the engine bay.

OK, so I swapped alternators with one I bought from a junk yard (47k miles on it) and the noise is still present.

After observing the noise for the past week, I have found it to be more of a screeching sound than a squeak or squeal. It only does it when I have the HVAC system on, no other time! The noise is coming from the front, right side of the engine towards the bottom.

PLEASE HELP!!!!!

Do yourself a favor and go to your local auto parts store and ask for a "gator" belt. It is a serpentine belt designed for maximum grip. Had the same problem on a Dodge pickup I had. The grooves in the pulleys that the belt passed over were slightly different sizes. Over a very short time, a new belt would begin to squeal because as it moved over the pulley with the thinner grooves, it would slip. Gator belt knocked it right out. Also make sure the idle tensioner bearing isn't shot. Have you tried spraying a little belt dressing on the inside of the belt as it is moving?

The noise was present with a "Gator" belt. I've installed a brand new belt tensioner pulley and a brand new Nissan belt. I'm done putting "aftermarket AutoZone type" products on my car that are supposed to be more efficient than OEM.

The noise does not sound like a slipping belt. It's more of a screech or grinding noise that is ear piercing if you are standing by the engine when it's revved.

Since it doesn't happen all the time, this is very hard to diagnose. The cold weather, or a cold start and go seems to make it happen more frequently.

This belt loves to be tight!!!!!!! I tighten it more today, I can just about turn it 45 degrees, so when the 20*F below weather kicks in tonight I will be able to see if the noise still occurs.

Still quiet when tight? Glad you didn't buy an alternator?

I bought a new alternator and didn't need to!!!!! Oh well...

Since I have tightened the belt, I have not heard any abnormal noise(s).

I have 04 6mt and changed both of my belts at the dealer last week after finding out that they were cracked. Since the change, my car starts to screech in the morning or when I turn it on. I NEVER had such a problem before until I had the dealer change them. I took it back to the dealer a few days ago and it still makes the noise. I am going to give them a call tomorrow and they will probably just ask me to bring it in so that they can adjust it AGAIN! Any thoughts?

New belts will stretch so they probably just need to be tightened again.

thank god for the search feature.

i have this very problem too. i had the underdrive belt replaced right before i went to Vegas on a long trip in November by Firestone. now about 6 weeks ago it started making the same squealing sound in the morning or when the engine was cold. it's freaking embarrassing! it wouldn't do it on warm days, but on cold days. remember, i went to vegas on the belts from San Diego, so i thought the belts would be broken in. i guess not. i had firestone replace them for free last friday, but it's freakin' cold today and the squealing continued.

FYI: I do have unorthodox racing pulleys so i went to their website and noticed that they recommend the following belts that go with it:
http://www.unorthodoxracing.com/guides/04100150_.pdf
• Alternator Power Steering and Water Pump Belt: Use Gates K060445 (45 1/4” or 1150MM)
• Air Conditioning Belt: Use Gates K040353 (35 7/8” or 910MM)

I'm going to have the belts tightened and check the water pump by Firestone. If that doesn't work, I'll buy these Gates belts and replace the belts.

After that, I'm all out of ideas.

OP, please keep me posted since we share the same problem. thanks!

Just make sure your belts are REALLY tight, tight enough so you can just about twist it 45 degrees.

Grant tightened my belts for me and so far so good. He also showed me how to do it. No squealing thus far. PM Gdup35sedan if you need help with some basic maintenance on your G in the San Diego area.
