Came up against that German Beast...
Ok well, first off if someone can tell me how bad it is for my engine that I actually pushed it to its limits through every gear before hitting the break in period I'd appreciate it...I just got the car 300 miles ago, and I've been babying it staying below 4k rpms...The occasional ricers, and 330ci have tried to stir me up but I've remained calm with my engines best interests in mind...But tonight an E46 M3 came up on my side, originally I let it go even though he was staring over at me the whole time...But he just kept waiting for me for about a good 10 mins...Finally he was stopped at a light as I was approaching at about 10-15mph in 2nd gear, so I timed the light and tried to blind side him (forgive me but he has a 53hp advantage I was desperate lol) anyways I was keeping him off for a good amount of time until about 5th gear when he finally caught up and started to pull...I shut it down there, only cause the car is brand new and I'm trying not to dabble to high into those speeds on public highways...All in all it was a good time, I just thought I'd share...Question my tires chirped when shifting to 3rd and into 4th...Is this normal in this car or is it from my inexperience in high speed shifting since I'm new to manual cars with this type of power...Also, my original question on how bad this one time event was for my car...I promise thats the only time until the engine is broken in...Thanks guys
Re: Came up against that German Beast...
You sucker punched him and he still whooped you, lol.
To answer your question, I'm not a big believer in the whole break in time theory. I drove mine fairly hard from delivery and am in the camp that believes this is the real way to break in a car.
Here's an interesting read on the whole subject.

Re: Came up against that German Beast...
How does street racing work exactly? The winner always shuts down too early and the looser always claim they were either cheater or they started to pull in the 5th gear. For example, if some psycho decided to drive his Escalade at 140mph for 15 minutes, do you have to pass him to beat him? I don't get it.
Re: Came up against that German Beast...
I'm not to sure what story you read...But I'm pretty sure I conceeded a loss and like I said we didn't push it to far past the limits...It was nothing you wouldn't do on a normal drive by yourself against no other vehicle...It was some driving fun...But good luck with your search as to how street racing works...Um yea...
Re: Came up against that German Beast...
I am no expert, but when i do am involved in a informal street race, the winner is usually the person who has a significant distance bewtween the opponent. If this cannot be determined than its usually the person who is more ***** out. However, i have only been in a few with my bmw before getting the g where a winner could not be determined quickly. Usually all sorts of people in a lesser powered cars will try to race and lose. But hey, I cant blame them. When I drove my stock honda civic in high school I tried to race (unsuccesfully) everyone willing. anyway, this is just my two cents.

In reference to Fast and the Furious, I did not know that REAL men race with the aid of computer generated imagery.

Re: Came up against that German Beast...
congrats on the kill, but from my experience as an engine builder, you need a break in period. I dont care what anyone else says: "the car is broken in from the factory", "newer engines dont need a break-in", "driving a car hard during a break-in gives you more power." Its all crap from people who don't know. Oil molecules need time to seep into the aluminum to provide proper lubrication among other things, and everything needs to be properly worn in before you get parts moving at 6000 rpm's. It probably wont make that much of a difference unless you want to someday make some serious horsepower out of your G, or are planning on keeping it for 150,000+ miles. Also everyone thinks of the break-in time to be for the engine only, but it is also for the clutch, flywheel, transmission gears, and rear gear among others.

I'll just add that it doesnt matter if you win by an inch or a mile. Winning is winning. (I forgot where I got that from.

Re: Came up against that German Beast...
I don't think you should have sucker punched the M3 like that in the beginning, but I don't think the M3 should have been staring you down for so long. M3 is faster than a G35 Coupe, end of story. I bet it was awesome to race that thing.
For those of you who always make fun of people who race, give the people a break. I have to say from personal experience that a nice stop-light race with a worthy competitor is such an AMAZING adrenaline rush, even if there is no clear winner or even if one person backs off before the other, etc. The feeling you get is just soooo much f*ckin fun it's ridiculous.

Thank You MrElussive...I know the sucker punch was uncalled for, but it was necessary because of my lack of power to his...He was beggin for it, with his stare down tactic..lol anyways, the rush you explained is exactly how you put it "AMAZING"...Like I said it was a small safe run against him, but defintely worth the loss...It's not often the driver of those things actually turns them loose..
