$800 Rat Bite

Hi All,

Just want to share (& vent).

So my SES light came on and I assumed that it was my Fujita intake acting up again. Well, I had to go to the dealership for some other stuff and I asked them to look into it.

Turns out that a rat had "nested" in a crevace of the manifold and decided to chew on my electrical harness. Now, I've had wires chewed up before with my remote car starter and I had fixed it.

But this time, it was well hidden. I can't really explain the detail but they told me that this was probably why my car as been feeling sluggish. The ECU can read one of the manifold sensors and by default caps my power (80% of full poptential).

Price to fix: $700 to $800.

Thanks for listening.......

****in animals, this probably needs a thread of it's own. Once I had to take my brothers car to work (2001 Olds Aurora) and I got into the car and flip it into reverse and though it felt jumpy. Didn't think much of it so I start driving and I gave it some gas going up a hill opened the throttle maybe 60% then I noticed the car (which is heavy) didn;t really slow down and the rpms didn't drop. Started to trip out pretty bad, drove a little further (open road wasn't worried about speed) but it seems like cruise control was on so I started freakin, I was pretty close to my work by then so I pulled into the parking spot to find out the brakes weren't very cooperative had to rip the e brake and turn the car off quick time.

Got outta the car, brakes are smokin from the extra work. Pop the hood and what do you know a squirrel decided the throttle wire was a great place to hide his walnut. Turns out every time I opened the throttle a little more the nut shimmied down further.

Moral of this story, animals **** **** up.

Sorry to hear that. Reminds me of what happened to my friend. He turned on a car this morning and he notices that theres no smoke coming out of his exhaust pipe ( its a really old privia) so he goes and checks it out and he hears scratching, and all of a sudden a squirl pops out.

Does your car stand for extended periods of time? Of all the places a rat can find it's way, it's just crazy that it got into a G, and that far in! Did they give you the rat for you to sacrifice to the car gods??

Thanks guys,

4DGS -- That is crazy and could have been so dangerous.

Agent F -- I use my car everyday but this probably happened back when I was in Boston at the same time my remote starter wires were chewed up (twice). I had an off-street parking spot but it was next to some restaurant garbage bins.

TXaaron3232 -- I don't know much about wiring in the car. They told me that, from what they could tell from the diagnostic, it seemed to be cut pretty deep inside the engine because they would have to take the manifold apart to get to the harness that needs to be replaced/rewired. That's why they quoted me $700 - $800 for part and labor. +1 on the rat trap. I was seriously considering some sort of rat trap in my engine bay but these f'ers are HUGE.

The messed up thing is that this dealership has always hooked me up and given me plently of service as "warranty" even though they shouldn't have. But they can't this time and I know they wouldn't pull a fast one on me. So it's no use taking the car somewhere else.
