rented buttonwillow raceway

Rented east loop of buttonwillow raceway and had time of my life. real nice staff set up apex and aiming cones and coached us on our road work. Track had nice paddock area, welder, tires gas, and lots of challenges: blind uphill turns, unweighting setions, compound curves, etc. Very challenging and humbling.
My recommendation to all.
Most fun ever with your car.....
p.s. total casualty was one wiped out M3 by son's friend.

Re: rented buttonwillow raceway

The first track I ever ran was Buttonwillow and that's a GREAT track! We ran the whole track (clockwise) and there were a few areas that were pretty challenging. If you're out that way, you should also check out Streets of Willow, that's a fun track too. Big Willow is right next door and a MUCH higher speed track, I've unfortunately never been on that track though.

The first few times driving on track is a VERY humbling experience... it helps you understand just how little you actually know. But, there's always that one session that just does it for you, it's the one that keeps all of us going back every chance we get and spending tons of time and money on our cars to get those extra tenths of a second off the lap times. =)

Re: rented buttonwillow raceway

You are exactly right....very humbling. You think you can drive, but hitting the right line at the right speed and not unsettling the car with sudden steering inputs and braking is very difficult. On the oither hand, if you do not do it you miss half the capabilities of your car. Really burns up tires, too.
The track was the east loop at about a mile. cost was under $2000 and with twelve guys, it was very reasonable for a car club/group. Only thing was mandatory head protection. WIndows down, no floor mats and empty trunk.
we did not time, but you sure don't take long to find out how good you are when you are chasing a good driver. We had porsches out there that were very together. The bmw m3-- I would say was closest to G.
The M3 was driven by 22 y/o and went into a double compound curve...in that the first part of the turn is very open and the next part is very tight,-- you have to hit a late apex and carry the curve high and then dive down to the tight apex, Drivers tend to make it two tight turns and get too low for the second turn and then slide out into the dirt. He hit the tire wall and crunched up the whole side of the car. No injuries. Worried about the parents. Not insured at raceway you know.

Same thing with my nephew. Wrecked a 2003 M3 while trying to drift. I guess he drifted to far.

Yeah, there's always someone out there in a lightweight, low powered car that knows the car inside and out and drives the tires off the car. I've personally watched sentras stay glued to the *** of a Viper on track... =)
