Believe it or not... coasting to stoplights uses more gas in a modern car. If you coast to the stoplight in gear with your foot off the gas, you will use no gas.. that's right, absolutely zero gasoline while you're coasting there, provided that your RPM's stay above a certain point and your engine is fully warmed up. If you coast in gear, the ECU cuts fuel from being injected into the motor to increase efficiency. All modern cars operate this way.

If you tend to fill up when the tanks gets down to 1/3 full(instead of letting it get real low), your fuel economy might not be as bad as you think. Unless you're running your tank from completely full to completely empty for every tank of gas.... It's Miles Per Gallon that matters, not Miles Per Tank.

remove all dead weight like floor mats, spare tire, change in the holder, gps disk, a/c and pwer steering belts, passengers. and don't turn on radio. also only fill up to 1/4 tank and drive till empty. if you fill all the way that's an extra 100lbs (aprox 8.5lbs/gal) your lugging around. also if you go on a diet and shed a few lbs that would be good too. buy skinnier tires to minimize rolling resistance - but cornering will suffer.

Don't expect to see major gains from it though.... the amount of fuel you use when coasting to a stoplight in neutral is the same amount that you would use to sit there and have your car idling... which is not much. But "not much" is still more than "none".
I think the common misconception that many people have though, is that there is a direct relation to how many RPMs your engine is spinning to fuel useage... when in fact that is not the case. It's more or less the relation of how hard you're pushing on the gas pedal to how fast you're going that determines economy.
