"Manual shift mode" on A/T

..how many people here use it? It doesn't seem to work too well on mine - 1st and 2nd gear don't "feel" right. Will using the manual shift mode make your car faster off the line, anyways? I don't think it will. Need the read manual tranny for that.

Like mine and use it a lot. You'll probably get better times if you leave it in 'D' and let the computer make the optimum shifts. Good control in spirited driving in twisties tho.

i like it. the only time i use it is when i want to do a little run without flooring it, like say from 60kph, i'll go from D->manumatic(4)->3->2 and then give it some gas and let her fly. Hehe, that way I stay between 4-5RPM and can justify it to myself since it isn't broken in yet fully, hehe

Just put it on "D" and floor it!! Than practice your manual shifting at your leasure.

Actually you get better time manually shifting the AT then the AT can do it self. Take a look at
<a href="http://edmunds.com/new/2003/infiniti/g35/100183768/roadtestarticle.html?articleId=83174&tid=edmunds.e .fulltest.content...Infiniti*">EDMUNDS.COM</a>, when they tested the G35 Coupe. They got 6.2s 0 to 60 and 1/4 in 14.66 @ 98.32 manually shifting the AT.</p>

um, no offence, but that's not exactly a "great" time. G should hit 0-60 in 5.5 about....and unless this is some new type of miracle transmission, the computer always will do a better job than the human manually shifting an auto tranny.

That 0 to 60 time in 5.5s was for a 6MT Coupe, not an AT Coupe.

Re: "Manual shift mode" on A/T

FWIW...I was flipping through the manual the other night and I noticed that the manual stated that when the transmission is in "Manu-matic" mode, the tranny will shift up/down for you, only up to gear that you have displayed on the dash.

- So if you put the tranny in "4" it will shift for you up to 4th gear and stop. Ditto for other gears.

I thought about this and then began to realize, all this "Manu-matic" stuff is a pile of BS. It operates just like any other auto tranny, such as P-R-N-D-3-2-1. It's just that the layout is different.

After realizing this, I felt kinda duped by the marketing. During my test drive, I was too busy trying to figure out how the thing worked and it's limits, assuming that it worked differently, when in fact, it does not. It's just a 5sp auto.

Re: "Manual shift mode" on A/T

That is only from a dead stop - it adjusts the display to the lowest gear. If you leave it in 4th it stays in 4th until it has to shift down or stall...

At that point the display will change as the gear changes. (Usually skips 3rd for me). Goes 2 then 1.

It will only change gears when necessary - and will never shift up - it will hit the rev limiter. The only mgmt it does it will not shift down over a certain RPM - Magazine said it was 4500 RPM but I have had it shift upwards of 5000...

You guys (G35doman & rxkeven) have described the differences btw the Sedan A/T and the Coupe A/T. Slight variation.

Re: "Manual shift mode" on A/T

Ok... first you must realize that the manual mode on the coupe is TOTTALY different than the sedan, especially if you have the sport package with the LSD.

For one thing, in the coupe the tranny never upshifts for you EVER.

Once you learn how to use it, the manual mode is a thing of joy. Use mine almost always.

As far as better peformance goes, It would be interesting to see. I can't see how there should be much diference because if you shift it right about 6100, she'll shift from 1 to 2nd right at the limiter. Even if your a tick late, she'll bounce off the limiter for a microsecond and then shift and still be haulin. Unless the computer allows the engine more RPMs before the limiter, I can't see how it could be faster when the manual shift is well timed.

If you have a coupe, please take the time to explore the manual in all situiations and I think you will come to appreciate the best manual mode this side of a M3 SMG.

Re: "Manual shift mode" on A/T

Thanks for the rundown bro. I've explored both quite a lot already, and was just commenting that those guys were describing the differences between the 2 trannies.
I personally like the Coupe's tranny a lot more than the Sedan's, but they're both a lot of fun.
Some think the computer will do a better job of shifting (and I'm inclined to agree) others think manual shifting will prevail. There's probably not much difference so long as you don't over-rev on manual.......enjoy bro....

Yeah, but that's more like an auto-shift-mode on a manual.

Re: "Manual shift mode" on A/T

okay, but i don't think there's a 1/2second difference between the manual and automatic G35.

Take like a mustang GT. A 5-speed, with an excellent driver, can run 13.8 stock. An auto CONVERTIBLE(read: more weight from conv. and auto) can run 14.0 ...... An auto LS1 can actually run faster than a manual LS1..... Given that the auto G35 weighs almost exactly that of a manual, i'd be willing to wager their 0-60 times are going to be very close
