FAQ: Downshifting

I have questions on downshfting from gear to gear. I already understand the concept of double clutching and heel toe, so it doens't need to be explained to me.

1. Let's say your in 5th gear and you want to downshift a gear, what RPM's should you blip the throttle to? Does this apply to all gears? I.e. 4 -->3, 6 ---> 5 and so forth

2. Let's say your in 6th and want to go to 4th? Will the needed match RPM's double as if you were going from 6th to 5th?

Thanks for your reponses.

Re: FAQ: Downshifting

for 1 gear downshifting, i blip the throttle up 500rpm

6th to 4th, i do double. it goes in pretty smooth.

Re: FAQ: Downshifting

500rpm per gear and 1000rpm 2 gears sounds very dangerous to me. how about driving at 100mph at 6th and you want to downshift to 4th or 5th? still 500rpm or 1000rpm?

gear ratio calculator! sorry that links to another forum, but that's the only one i know to calculate your gear ratio/speed relationship. put in the gear ratio and tire size and you'll get the answer.

Re: FAQ: Downshifting

There will be a difference gear to gear.
But the way to determine rev matching is to watch your revs on the way up through the gears.

For example
If you are doing 80mph in 4th note the revs.
Shift to 5th & stay at 80 mph note the revs.
The difference is what you use to rev match no matter what speed, when downshifting.

E.G.
If the above math = 500 rpm dif.
Then when @ 4500 rpm in 5th
To downshift to 4th add 500 = 5000 rpm blip to rev match.

In reallity it is not that scientific.
In general if you blip the throtle aprox +500 from current revs, you'll get a decent downshift.

Re: FAQ: Downshifting

Watch those lower gears! I don't have my G yet, but speaking from experience with my other vehicles, the difference between those lower gears (1&2) is closer to 800rpm-1000rpm, while the difference between the rest of the gears is generally 500rpm.

There is NO substitution for observing the difference for yourself. Do as has been suggested and just notice the RPM difference for each gear.

As for the 6th gear @ 100mph thing, it doesn't matter what sounds like too much, all that matters is what the car is going to need. If there is a 1000rpm difference between 4th and 6th, at a constant speed, then all that matters is that you give the amount of RPMs needed to make a smooth downshift.

Keep in mind, the longer you take to perform the downshift, the more your revs drop. If you disengage 4th at 2000rpm to downshift to 3rd, but you take a long time to perform the downshift, then you're not necessarilly going to want to blip the revs to 2500K. The longer you take, the more the revs drop. The bottom line is that you want to blip the revs, for your lower gear of choice, based off the RPMs at the EXACT TIME OF THE BLIP. Sounds like common sense, and it is, but you'd be surprised how long you might take to perform the downshift when thinking about it too hard/long.
