How did you break in?
How did you break in?
Hi all, im a new owner of the G35c and i was wondering how many of you actually went the other route and 'ran the car hard' during break in period? any comments appreciated
Re: How did you break in?
I ran the car hard from day 1.. Most people would disagree with me but whatever, I had the car on a lease for 36 months so if ther were to be any long term engine problems, it wouldnt be my problem =D

Re: How did you break in?
Of course you should always allow the car to come fully up to temperature before stomping on it, always, no exceptions.
Run it hard right from the start. I don't mean banging the rev-limiter non-stop either. Just getting on with it.
If an engine has a problem after the first few warm ups it is a build defect.
Ran dionsaur oil the first two changes then switched to synthetic, Mobil 1. This allows rings to seat properly. Going synthetic right from the start does not allow rings to seat.

I ran her hard but never before she was up to operating temps. That's what kills em.

Re: How did you break in?
Ran it hard AFTER the clutch and breaks were broken in. You don't want to glaze the clutch!

Re: How did you break in?
I broke it in how I planned on driving it.
Note that I did not plan on accelerating into high rpms in 5th...then slamming it into 4th, especially on the ride home from picking it up. Whoops haha...guess I had to get used to a 6 speed. But its all good now.

Re: How did you break in?
I punched it at 250, 500, 750, and then after that I just drove how I normally drive. Always made sure to vary the rpm's while driving on the highways, though. That "run it hard from day one" thing that mechanics tell you is such awful advice. The gears need at least 500 miles to break in. The engine is spun at different rpm's (and taken to redline) at the factory, but not under load.
If you leased your car (I know I did), break-in isn't so important. If you purchased your car and want it to last as long as possible, follow the 1,200 mile break-in.

Re: How did you break in?
i ran mine pretty hard from the day i got it. The best i can estimate my car probably is in the condition that a car with about 10k miels on it would be in (clutch especially). It was my first manual car... hell first nice car... hell it does the QM faster than my last car did 0-60. I got over myself tho after a while and realized i was getting 11 mpg and needed to chill out a little. I dont go around chirping gears and revving it up anymore... i jsut drive it normally and will occasionally use the extra go to drop a gear and pass a mom in a minivan or something..... actually only pass men... women cant drive

Re: How did you break in?
I broke it in the same way I break in my bikes and rebuilt engines. using mototune usa's controversial topic on break in methods.

Re: How did you break in?
Okay but engine break-in and car break-in are two different things.
The two things you can really screw up by driving it like you stole it early on are the brakes and the clutch.
Glaze the clutch or get a hot spot on it early on and you can expect to replace it early... and forget about warranty covering it. Ditto brakes.
As tempting as it may be, just make sure that you don't make a habit of smoking the tires with high-rpm launches until the clutch is FULLY broken in.
Take my word for it and learn from my mistake.
In case anyone disagrees with what I've said, I have pictures of my OEM clutch, pressure plate and flywheel to show any doubters what happens when you drive it too hard too early.
...And happily, I also have a brand new carbon racing clutch, Exedy flywheel and Motul synthetic tranny oil -- and now the clutch can handle the abuse I normally give when I take my G to the track or autocross (or smoke beemers off the lights...)
