Is TS ECU Needed for Mods???

When it comes to the Technosquare ECU Upgrade and the modifications it makes to the amount of fuel given to the engine.

I am thinking about adding the crawford plenum and the high-flow cats and am trying to find out if I will need to get the Technosquare ECU upgrade to adjust for the changes to the required fuel to the engine.

Do you think I need some kind of engine management or can the stock ECU relearn the new mods?

Thanks alot.

Jason

I am running that set up just fine without TS. You're not making that big a difference with those mods that it will require an ECU change. Your stock ECU can handle it. The TS flash is a nice to have, not a requirement.

from some of the big guys who are all into it a lot of people say if you do the intake and cats you lose HP if you dont get a reflash on your ECU so its on you if you want to make sure and you're running right then get it. your stock ECU is not set up for such free flowing so if you look at it its running on stock mode and your upgrades are actually bogging you car if you pay close attention when you drive you should feel it

Re: Is TS ECU Needed for Mods???

so if one was to get cats and intake they should reflash their stock ecu?

and another thing, how exactly do you do that. i've heard of diff methods. on my last car (maxima) i reflashed it by taking the negative connector off my car battery and leaving it like that for a few minutes then reconnecting it (the clocks, radio, etc would be reset) is that the right way to do it?

no regrets that its not a "nissan"... SHIFT_into_D VQ35DE automagic

I think you're mixing up "reflash" or reprogram your ECU (i.e. TS) vs. "reset" your ECU (i.e. disconnecting your battery for 12 hours or the complicated pedal depress routine).

Which one do you mean?

Note to Moderators!!! We need a Forum, Like 99.99% of other forums where we can add emoticons like "I'm with Stupid and Yeah, what he said!"

After having said that...I'm with Stupid and Yeah, what he said!

You will lose power with these mods due to the ECU over compensating for increased air flow...hence you will feel a bog...much like I did b/f the reflash...and no more ECU resetting after the TS Reflash...IE, what the Maxima dude was talking about with the Battery.

Re: Is TS ECU Needed for Mods???

The MAF supplies a 1-5.0 volt signal to ecu. This voltage is measured accurately:
[0.02volt] [8 bit A/D] [0.005 volts 10 bit A/D] this is then placed in an equation [grams per second of air flow ] = Constant + maf voltage raised to the 3.5 power. Then the grams per second [0-256] is divided by the desired AF ratio to develop injector opening time [this time must be corrected for battery voltage, fuel temperature, injector open and close time [ramp up rate] and whether you are decelerating, cruising, or accelerating [how hard?] by TPS voltage [throttle position].

Does anyone else feel eerily unable to even attempt to consider where this thread could possibly go now?

Re: Is TS ECU Needed for Mods???

Neffster pulled 246 HP with Plenum and Cats. I pulled almost 2 tenths of a second faster in a 1/4 mile controlling for all conditions possible. And if you read the links Q45Tech provided you'll see how changing the plenum and cats will not "bog" anything down and the stock ECU can and will accomodate the flow. It's not that much more flow.

I suggest before you run out and purchase the reflash that you take actual measurements yourself and decide for yourself. Make sure you control for the following when using either a dyno or G Tech for measurement:

Air temp
Barometric pressure
Altitude
Slope (if you use a G Tech) of the pavement
Wind (if you use a G Tech)
All fluid temps (differential, tranny, engine, radiator), basically get it to operating temp.
Humidity
Fuel batch
VDC on or off
A/C on or off
Power braking, yes or no, and if yes at what RPM

Everyone of these conditions can be controlled for or corrected and keep in mind that your ECU will change it's behavior over 90 degrees. I conducted measurements in the 50s, 70s, and 80s on the same road and mathematically corrected everything and found improvements in both 0-60 and 1/4 mile times, as well as the G Tech Pro Comp HP and TQ measurements.

The only thing I didn't measure was A/F. My opinion is that the T/S reflash is not necessary but a nice to have helpful mod, but you will make gains with a plenum and cats without the T/S reflash. I encourage you however to take measurement for yourself, and publish your findings.

Re: Is TS ECU Needed for Mods???

Isn't the A/F the critical thing to consider when doing things like this? If the car does lean out (an assumption) then there is a consideration for reliability vs. the gains. Has anyone measured how much of the gains from a plenum and cats are attributable to the engine leaning the mixture?
