you always have to sand and prep if you want it to look nice.
sanding / preping takes away all the oils, dirt, sand, etc. that piles up on it.
also prevents chips / peeling

OK im putting this in because ive gotten lots of emails if anyone has any other questions PM me but its all covered here....
OK man sorry for the wait.. here you go first of all you have to remove the parts you want to paint... obiously... when you do this pay close attention to which parts overlap the others. That way you know which to install first (backward steps)!
After initially removing the parts .. strip them down till thiers nothing left but the parts you want to paint (I was able to take EVERYTHING off my center console with the exception of the arm rest bin) The less stuff you have to tape the less chances of messing up.
Step one:
Identify the material. You only wanna paint something thats either plastic of hard vinyl also lightly sand if there are any inperfections on the surface DONT sand if there are none.
Step Two:
Clean plastics with SEM Soap ( avalible at any automotive paint supplier)
Step Three:
To Be safe reclean surface with wax and tar remover
Step Four:
DRY DRY DRY ( nothing can be left wet)
Step Five:
Primer ( any spray can primer will do) REMEMBER the more coats the less likely to chip.. I went through several coats since its a high traffic area. LOL
Read back of primer for directions usually dries in 15 mins between coats.
Step five:
Base Coat. BETWEEN 3-4 COATS. If you wanna go cheap your local shop will have basic colors for you paint gun ( asuming you have one) you can also do rattle can colors but it wont be as evenly spread. (High School art project VS Prof. Job) If you want a better color match to the exterior you need to get your color code and have the paint made which is what i did. B16 Carribean Blue
LASTLY: CLEAR COAT THE MORE THE SHINIER AND IT ALSO PROTECTS 3-4 COATS!!
GOOD LUCK
