I changed my oil for the first time today. When I was filling it back up with new oil, and checked the dipstick, I found it to be rather difficult to figure out the level as it almost read as if it was way overfilled. So I waited a bit and checked again, and while oil was still pretty high up on the dipstick, I could tell that the level was not actuallt that high since it was only on half the dipstick. So my question: Does the oil drain back from the head to the oil pan partly through the dipstick hole? The same thing happened when I poured more oil in to bring the level up. I had to wait before I could get a decent reading.

Yeh, the damn dipstick function isn't the G's 'forte' for sure....lol....but you can make 'do' with it by simply waiting for the oil to settle b4 checking. I usually make sure a close amount is put back in after changing, say 4.5 qts., then when it's been parked overnight, I'll check it in the morning after the oil has drained back down, and top it off with the other half quart.
BTW, it helps a lot to leave the dipstick out while adding oil. Then replacing it and dipping it to check the level. This stops the stick from getting too much oil on it causing difficult readings.

I HATE THE FREAKIN DIPSTICK! I took the dip and clean it out and put it back in. Then waited for a minute and checked the dip... god dammit! oil still over the dip..did two or three times.. same results. Oh man....I miss my Prelude so much!! I shoulda kept my prelude and put Supercharge in it! *arrgh*.... ok. Time to go to the bbq... I'm gonna use the dip stick for marshmallow.

I checked it this morning before I started her up. It was better, but still not totally clear. Having really clean oil didn't really help either, but it was much easier in my 240sx.

I was checking it sort of in the dark last night so it didn't dawn on me at the time, but even this morning in light the dipstick is a pain in the **** to get in and out as well. It's almost as if the dipstick was a complete afterthought.

 

so what would happen if you took your G to some local gas station or elsewhere other than the dealership and got your oil changed?
they sure wouldn't know of this issue and fill your oil short.
