brand new clutch, was good, now this....

Now, I don't normally drive in traffic. My house is all surface streets away from work, and when I am on the freeway, typically it's when there is less traffic. But today, the traffic was pretty much stop and go for a good 30 minutes, and it really seemed to take a toll on my clutch.

Normally there is a 1/2"-1" play in the pedal before the clutch begins its disengagement. Today after all this driving, the pedal would almost hit the floor before it disengaged, and engaging the clutch was just the same...1" of travel from disengaged to engaged. Now, I know this isn't normal, as this has only done it one other time...in traffic. (see the pattern here...)

the best way I could describe it is it was like brake fade...like when you use the brakes a lot (read: really hot brakes) and the pedal feels all mushy and won't do anything until it comes close to the floor.

Is there any info on what this can be and how to fix it....I thought i had all my problems behind me after replacing the clutch...please help...thanks in advance

sounds more like hydraulic than mechanical. Was the clutch fluid replaced and bled when the clutch was replaced? Maybe that was your problem all along.

I was going to ask the same question as PTownG. Also, not knowing where you are from I would ask what the temperatures were today. Sure it's been cold as hell recently here, but if you live in a warm climate the extra heat will seriously jack up DOT3 fluid that the clutch lines typically use. Whether that's the issue or not, the next time you do bleed the clutch line go with DOT4. Not sure otherwise why you'd be having issues unless there was a problem with the installation of the new clutch or another underlying factor that was present beforehand which we aren't seeing, something a bit odd like a bad clutch hydraulic cylinder or something. Post your results if you figure out the problem though, good luck man.

Bad hydraulic clutch cylinders are not unusual with Nissan, it's an area that wears out. Bleed the clutch line, make sure the reservoir is full, that's a starting place. Normally when the cylinder is bad the clutch pedal stays on the floor and has to be repositioned by hand. Hope the issue you're having isn't a poor quality clutch or install.

thanks for the help guys...i will look into the hydraulic part of it...if i recall, should be covered by my exteneded warranty too... a problem such as this, would a tech be able to trouble shoot this without replicating the issue...ie if he looked at the clutch cylinder or liquid, could he see that there is a problem?
