6MT Question

is it normal that down-shifting into 2nd or 1st gear is very hard during the first 20 min or so after starting the car in the morning?
it's been very difficult, or impossible at times, to down shift to 2nd (while going less than 20 mph) or 1st (while driving around 5 mph) gear right after starting the car, but after a while, say 30 min or longer, it becomes fairly smooth.
is it just my G with such behavior or do your G's also behave in the same way?
fyi, my car has 22k mi.
thanks in advance for your feedback.

Re: 6MT Question

As with any piece of machinery, the tranny works best once warmed up! The tranny will always shift a lil stiffer when cold.

Just as a reference, why would you shift from 2nd to 1st at around 20MPH? There is a lockout feature that will not allow you to shift into too low a gear. So if you are doing 50 and try to put it in 1st for example, it won't let ya!

Re: 6MT Question

hey, Diesel....thanks for the reply.
I guess I wasn't really clear on the condition in my orig. post.
I don't shift from 2nd to 1st while going 20 mph.
when the traffic moves slower, say from 30 mph to less than 20 mph, I like shifting to 2nd (from 3rd or 4th) so I can punch it when the traffic moves quickly.
and if the traffic moves even slower, say from 20 mph to less than 5 mph, I like shifting to 1st (from 2nd or 3rd) so I can quickly accelerate if needed.
I'm aware of the lockout feature and that's not what my question was about.
hope that cleared a little....
any thoughts????

Re: 6MT Question

As mentioned above, the tranny oil needs to be
warmed up before the syncro's work properly on a
cooler/cold day (say below 50F). when the oil is not
warmed up, you will notice the gates to be stiff,
sometimes locking you out from the lower gear gate.
It's normal..some cars will even lock you out while
shifting up.

If you encounter such lock-out state, double clutch
and you should be able to get it into the next gear gate.

<example>
If you're going 3-2 and the tranny locks you out of 2, do
3-N-2 (clutch out in N).

If you're going 2-3 and the tranny locks you out, double
clutch shift up (2-N-3).

just some fundamentals of MT driving.

Re: 6MT Question

I find it best not to shift to 1st when the car is at least rolling..1st is only good from a stand still..

Re: 6MT Question

Kenchman i do drive my friends manual cars all of the time, a 330ci, acura tsx and sti but am not an "experienced" manual driver like everyday but i can drive. I have a ? When Vin diesel said "granny shifting and not double clutching" how int he hell do you have time to do that during a race or on the road in a situation? I guess if i was in a car doing it its so much diff. then simulating it in my head haha... Martin

Re: 6MT Question
