Removing clear protector stickers on rear quarter panel

Hi guys,

Tried the search but failed.

One of the first things I noticed on the car when I inspected it (the day I bought the car) was the 2 piece clear decal on the rear quarter which I assume is there to protect the paint from stone chips.

Over the years the edges of the decals have gotten dirty which doesn't look crash hot to be honest.

I was wondering if anyone that has taken them off has had any issues with paint damage as I'd like to remove them.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I tried a heatgun to it and it began to peel it back with the paint attached' i think they use some super adhesive on it?

Clear Plastic Overlays....?

Justin, you can take the time to remove them or when you're detailing your G try cleaning them with a fine cleaner or ScratchX. Having them clean will make them disappear and you won't have rock chips either....

Cheers guys for the feedback. I doubt the paint would come off?!?! I'll try the ScratchX as I have some handy and if that's no good I might take the plunge and remove them.

I replaced mine because they had yellowed. They come off but it wasn't easy. I ended up using a rag with plane old gas to get the glue residue off. Probably not the best thing for the paint but it worked. I got the replacements at G35parts.com and they look good new. They are easier to replace than repairing paint chips...

I've got a black coupe, and I don't know what the previous owner drove in, but mine are completely destroyed with rock chips. It looks horrible, and I'm thinking about taking it off as well.

i peeled mine off pretty easily. there was a lot of adhesive residue left so that took forever to clean off though. so much so, that even after 2 years i still find random spots of old adhesive when i wash my car

I peeled mine with no paint issues. Took at least 30 minutes cleaning the adhesive of the car. I used Goof-Off.

Just be careful, I took mine off and the paint (IP) on the rocker panels came off with it.

i agree it looks odd, but that is prime real estate for rock chips...especially if you have wider tires up front.

OK got some bad news guys...

I decided to take them off.

On the passenger side they came off perfectly. No difference in colour too, perfect!

BUT...

On the drivers side the bottom sticker on the skirt came off perfectly but the one above it took off some clearcoat?!?!?!?!?!?!

WHAT THE FUUUUUUUUU!!!!!!!!!!

Holy **** I read that the paint on these cars was crap but this is ridiculous!!!

I feel OK about it this morning but I did lose sleep over this last night. After a good clean and a cut and polish it doesn't look so bad, but it still pisses me off.

I've contacted a detailer who's hopefully going to come over later today to have a good look at it. I'm hoping he can work some magic on it.

If a body shop has to repair it I'm either going to not bother, or go ahead with it as that panel has been keyed so I'd be killing 2 birds with one stone.
