Question what am I doing wrong (missing gears)

what's up fellow g drivers I bought an 04 coupe 6 spd and it's my first car with a manual trans. Anyway whenever I get on it I usually miss 3rd or 2nd gear and I feel bad revving my g up so high so any suggestions as to what I should be doing or what I'm doing wrong? Thx

I dont see how you can miss 3rd, its just pushing forward from neutral position. I would say take your time instead of trying to shift quickly. When you pull out of first keep holding the **** left and pull it straight back for 2nd.

Learn to drive manual correctly before trying to do it quicker.

How can you miss 2nd, you just pull straight back. I learned to drive manual about 6 months ago and the only thing that im somewhat shaky on is downshifting from time to time. Slow and steady wins the race.

Could be one or both of two things.

First, you may not be pushing the clutch in fully and the syncros are not engaging and/or you are letting the clutch out too fast before your gear is engaged fully. DO NOT try to "speed shift" (not lifting your foot from the gas when you shift)this car. The OEM tranny and clutch will not put up with much of it before they go BOOM. Car and Driver Magazine found out that speed shifting makes less than 0.1 seconds difference in 1/4 mile times, so to save equipment, they don't do it in their car tests any more.

My worst gear it third, but only when I get lazy or tired. Be careful, too many missed shifts can ruin teeth and syncros and it's $$$$$ to fix.

HAHA....I see a new clutch and trans in this members future. You can't be "Speed Racer" until you learn how everything works! Buying a beater doesn't work because every clutch/trans feels different even in the same make car. The key is taking your time and learning how your G feels/operates....

lol i remember when first bought my g, also my first manual car (72k on original clutch when I bought it)....then I got a new clutch after 2 weeks... my friend wanted to race me and I kept missing the gears, the next day it kept slipping and finally gave out true story.

moral- dont pretend to be in fast and the furious (until a few months) cause you'll regret it after you fry your clutch

You're lucky you didn't blow the welds on the intake.

Speed shifting is rather useless. It just sounds bad for the car if you ask me. I can get down some quick shifts, but I always lift up on the gas during the shift.

i got my g, and it was my first stick shift. after one week (first week driving a stick), i went to an 1/8 mile drag strip. needless to say, i kept missing second, and sometimes third. just do it slow, and practice, getting quicker and quicker. when i was doing it slow, it would take around .5 seconds to make the 1-2 shift. now, it's a lot faster, and i rarely miss gears. i just beat my friends 09 Mazdaspeed3
