Supercharger

Hi guys! Can anybody tell me how a supercharger works? I had read about it a long time ago, but I can't remember anymore. I have a 2002 Sequoia and just found out TRD makes a supercharger for it that increases the power and torque to about 350 from about 240. I'm skeptical about bolt-ons but this one being from TRD, it's fully backed by Toyota. Heck they even have headers and a cat back exhaust that increase the power even more ... even rims. I had no clue. Thanks! Isn't Nissan behind Toyota in the high performance bolt-ons field? There's no room in the G coupe for a super charger, is there? That would be scary if you could bring the Coupe's power up by 100 horses. Ouch!

Re: Supercharger

not sure how a SC works but im sure it just makes for a richer fuel/air ratio for bigger combustion...and there isnt any room under the hood, you'd need a scoop put in.....Stillen has an SC kit for the 350Z now
Yeah i've done research on some TRD parts, that SC for that toyota 4.7 V8 looks real nice, and fully backed by factory warranty i believe...but that engine wasnt built for speed dude, its just a torque monster for heavy towing and other various truck/Suv applications. At around $4000 its a great deal because of the huge gains and factory warranty (will probably cost $500 to install it though)
Word is on the street that a twin turbo kit is going to be available for the coupe in 3 months (aftermarket- not covered by warranty though)
Nissan has Nismo as their high-performance bolt-on company...there isnt too much out there yet for the G coupe, soon though, patience

Re: Supercharger

Has anyone heard if Nismo will have a SC or TT kit for the G anytime?

Re: Supercharger

I've heard that the Greddy TT will be here within three months, some people say more. As for the SC I think it will take longer, because they have to find a good place to bolt it in. I saw somewhere they installed an SC on a 350z but the SC was sticking out of the hood! Even if they cover it with a taller hood, it will still ruin the beautiful lines of the 350z or the G for that matter.

Re: Supercharger

A Supercharger uses the same concept as a turbo. It's all about "Forced Induction". Forcing more, compressed, colder air down the air intake of the engine. This makes better more powerful combustion occur. This inturn results in more HP and more torque. Especially at higher RPM's. The differance between a Supercharger and a turbo is that the unit (essentially a turbine), that forces more air into the engine runs from the pullies on the front of the engine. The same pullies that run the AC, power steering, etc. Since this turbine spins at the same RPM as the engine the power/torque curve follows engine RPM. That means even at idle there is turbine "boost" although not alot. A turbo uses exhaust gases exiting the exhaust manifold to spin a similiar "turbine" which pulls in cold compressed air for combustion. The inherent problem with turbo's is "turbo lag" which means that you have to get engine RPM's higher, causing exhaust to exit faster, thus inturn spinning the turbo faster to produce boost. That is a simplified expression of my understanding of the process. I'm sure there is alot more to it and many opinions as to which is the best. As for myself I will probbably be going with a TT system once a reliable one is availble at a decent price. Thanks

Re: Supercharger

Thanks for the replies guys. I know turbos have been around for a long time, but they used to have a bad rap. I don't know anymore. I still think they're bad for the engine in the long run. Maybe the've been improved that much. I've never heard anything bad about superchargers, so they get my interest more.
