Nice/Clean Computer/DVD/NAV Upgrade

I haven't seen this posted here yet, so here goes:

http://www.unc.edu/~inorkuo/g35/

The only thing I don't like, is that the screen is out fulltime. Oh, and the fact that the guy used a white DVD drive instead of a black one...he should really replace that. Other than that, it's a great install for less than the factory DVD-NAV system.

Re: Nice/Clean Computer/DVD/NAV Upgrade

He has his e-mail at the bottom of the referred page. I thought about doing something like that, but then thought about using a laptop and rearranging all the parts to fit where the DVD systems is now.

Hopefully when car arrives this month, I can make it one of my projects. I'm sure glad I became an Engineer. I would just run USB to make it simple.

wicked: he says on that page that he is using a tape adapter for the audio...

not the best solution imo...could have went with an FM modulator...

Re: Nice/Clean Computer/DVD/NAV Upgrade

Hey. One of those cars is mine. Don't hate on the white dvd drive :-) Believe me, we looked high and low for a black one. We even thought about spray painting this one, but we figured that it was going to be hidden in the center console anyway.

We spoke with a lot of audio people at stereo install places and they told us that a good tape adapter would actually be better quality than an FM modulator. An added bonus is having the button on the head unit to control it. We tested the tape adapter against a cd (going back and forth between the two with the same song) and we couldn't tell which one was which.

I'm glad you guys like it though.

I hang out at both FA and here. It seems like it's a younger crowd around here.

Re: Nice/Clean Computer/DVD/NAV Upgrade

The only problem I see is with the comp case it is too big and take up too much trunk space. He could have just gone at have gotten those tiny pc's that barely take up space and have the same features. But that system he has on is really nice. Would not mind doing that on myu car.

Re: Nice/Clean Computer/DVD/NAV Upgrade

The install that was originally in the car was with one of the mini pc's that you mentioned. It worked great, but we decided we wanted to go with custom desktops instead. I still have the mini pc if you're interested in buying it and putting it in yourself.

The first install had the mini pc in the center console where the DVD drive is now.
