Notchy Gears
Notchy Gears
Hey guys, sorry I searched up this problem but the only suggestion has been to flush and refill transmission fluid, but I have already done that just a couple months ago. The problem didn't really occur before the flush or immediately after.
Basically my problem is that some gears sometimes feel notchy and there is almost some what of a metal on metal feeling but no grinding. It doesn't happen all of the time just everyonce and a while. It mostly occurs in second, fifth and 6th gear. I'm not sure if this should be any concern and like I said, I just had the transmission fluid flushed and refilled with synthetic nissan fluid, but the problem wasn't really there before the flush and has been mostly fine after the flush. My car only has 47,000 KM or about 30K miles and the previous owner treated the car pretty well. Anyways, everytime this has happened the clutch has been fully depressed (i know how to drive stick), other then that there is not much else I can say. Somedays (most actually) the gears feel great, feels smooth and no notchy feeling at all
Anyways, just wondering if this is a major issue and what I can do to fix it or if it just is what it is. I'm still on powertrain warranty so I'd rather find out about any issues sooner then later.
Thanks in advance.

check the weather tempurate.
im in the same boat. i changed fluids at about 50km from stock to amsoil.
I noticed once it was changed it was perfectly smooth. then the weather dipped down during winter time and gears are like you describing.
noticed anything around 11 Celcius or lower, upshifting was no problem smooth as silk. But if i was leaving my street had to come back to second at the stop sign, i couldn't unless i forced into second or if the car slowed down under 5 km/h. at that point i would just come to a complete stop and start at first. very annoying not being able to downshift, but after 5 minutes of driving the fluid warmed up and back to smooth shifts.
the metal on metal i know what you mean, i was worreid as well, but i think thats just the way our gearboxes are.

^^^yeah, i know what you mean, but the car was already warmed from a 25 minute drive. I have drove it in -25 degrees celcius and it seems like that is a different feeling then what i'm describng. It was about 5 degrees celcius at the time.
I am having a similar issue with mine. I recently did a 75w 90 royal purple change to my tranny and rear diff and, before the fluid warms up, it is noticeably harder to shift. After its warm, no issues. I cant help but wonder if its the difference between the 75w 85 that its supposed to get and the 75w 90 RP that I put in. I did see, when I drained the stock stuff, that it was considerably thinner looking than the RP. So... I dunno.
for the 5th n 6th prob, try adjusting the shifter plate on the top of the shifter assy over to the right just a hair. but dont go too much, or else u wont have to push down for reverse.
^^^^I'M SO LOST. sorry i have no idea on how to do anything related to tranny's, really just oil and tire changes. I'm guessing my mechanic would know about that, is there a specific name or reason for this?

If you haven't done so use synthetic fluid in your trans, it's not subjected to weather like the OE Nissan fluid. Red Line or Amsoil are both very high quality synthetic trans fluids....

theres 2 ways to adjust it, in the car or underneath. in car can be tough, as u kinda need to get the shift **** off, thou if your careful you can do it with out that. i need to remove the shifter trim, by pulling up at the rear til the clips release. there is a rubber cover with 4 bolts holding it down, remove them. that will expose the triangular shifter plate. loosen the 3 bolts very little, and slide the plate ever so slightly to the right. then tighten the bolts and reassemble.
you can use the outline of the bolts on the shifter plate as a guide of how far to move. dont move it too far or else u wont have to go down to grab reverse.

^^^thank you very much, i'll look into it a little, maybe have a mechanic do it as i'd rather spend 50-100 bucks then screw it up and cost me 2K in the new future.
wow, has anyone done this before, and it works? I cannot downshift smoothly no matter what the temprature is. its just hard and I dont want to force it too hard, would this help me out ? I will try it this weekend and see. by a hair line eh ... hmm interesting info.

EDIT: this was an 08 sedan, not sure how different it is from the coupe 6MT, if any. I have another customer in an 05 6MT coupe and no such feedback.

for the comment about amsoil being notchy when cold. I agree. Whens fluid gets warm or warm weather in general way better than OEM fluid. But driving off when its cold it is a little scary not knowing if there is going to be damage or not because of the hard shifts.
