exhaust louder first start up
Re: exhaust louder first start up
it sounds a little louder... I *think* this has to do with the idle rpm's being higher to warm up the engine quicker.

Re: exhaust louder first start up
I know what you mean but I dont think it's a good thing. I think it has to do with the fact that the car is not warmed up yet. I get that if the car isn't warmed up and I have to get on the highway right away. I try not to accelerate too hard until the engine has reached normal operating tremperature but the exhaust does have a different tone still. It's probably cause the oil is stil down in the bottom of the engine. You should probably wait a few sec before getting on the gas.
Re: exhaust louder first start up
wizawuza is right it's because the idle is higher. Another factor could be that since the engine/exhaust is cold that the condensation in the exhaust gas is not vaporizing and you hear a bit of the gurgleing of the water sloshing around in the pipes and mufler. Once the exhuast is hot the water simply burns off.
Re: exhaust louder first start up
What I've noticed, is that if I drive the car for a while (bring the engine to a normal temp operation), then park somewhere for 5 minutes, get back to the car and start the engine again, there is much more * growl * than when I start the car and the engine is cold. I'm not talking about idling tone for the first few minutes, but rather the first second as the engine fires up - don't know, just sounds meaner

Expansion of metal passages changes in hole diameters within muffler, pipe diameters, etc. Also the speed of sound changes with the air temperature changing the tuning.
