What to look for? 04 G35
Hey all, I may be a new full time member in a few days here. Thinking about buying a 04 G35 6spd MT with 49000km on it. I just want to know if there is anything in particular that I should be looking for? Anything that is a common failure (Already read about TSB on leaking sparkplug tube seals). I've had 88-94 cavaliers and Sunbirds in the past so I'm no stranger to things failing ha. Plus I've been in automotive parts retail for a good number of years and spent a couple as a mechanic.
I've drove beaters all my life and now at 25, I finally decided to opt for the one car I have been dreaming of owning for some time, but I seem to have found myself in a rush to buy it with little to no indepth research on these beasts?
So long story short, anything that is insightful I would greatly appreciate!
Thanks.

I think there should be a sticky for these questions.

I can offer some personal insight. I have an 04 6mt coupe. I bought it with 48k on the clock. I have yet to have any mechanical issues (knock on wood). The car was highly neglected however when I bought it. The clutch was replaced about a month before i bought the car. You can count on that. I didn't know how often the fluids were changed so I flushed everything. Oils were like glue fluids looked milky. After changing all of these the care ran awesome. I had to replace drive belts, brakes and filters, air inside and cabin and oil. But if the car is maintained you shouldn't have very many issues at all. People complain a lot on here about squeaks and creaks...Buy a $5 can of white lithium grease, spray window channels, seat hinges, door hinges, if you have a sun roof spray the tracks, and work some into the rubber window seal along the side of the sunroof. Oh yeah, window motors are going to probably burn out on you. Cardone sells what you need with a lifetime warranty.
So things you can look forward to:
Window motors
clutch
Some squeaks
The car drinks gas
The car eats brake pads
The car chews up tires (it has an odd camber)
Other than that keep it clean and maintained and you will have it for a long time. Welcome to the forum.

I own a 04.5 6MT and in response to your inquiry about mechanical issues....syncro's specifically, the 03-04 gear box had weak syncros. My 5th gear syncro started to crunch with 40k on the odometer. The fix was to have the whole transmission replaced under warranty....they installed the updated 05+ gear box.
The 04 actually was a better year to get because the 03's had all of the 'new' car bugs/gremlins that had to be worked through and the 05's had the Rev-up motor, with it's oil consumption issues. The 04 6MT has the Brembo's so it didn't have the brake caliper issues of the 03-04 auto transmission cars.
Other mechanical issues on an 04 are clicking rear axles requiring tightening...this was an 03-to early 04 issue but was supposed to be fixed on the production lines for later 04 cars.....another issue is the Fuel gauge not reading correctly.
Check out the different areas on this NHTSA site for TSB's or other issues on the 03-04 or other model years http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/tsbs/tsbsearch.cfm

This car is extremely versatile and reliable as far as real reliability goes like the car starting, running, etc. However stupid things happen like clutch rattling, strange unknown noises, window motors failing/breaking, and other ridiculous things happen. But as far as being able to push the car every day and it still runs and everything, it's quite the machine.
