Will I need a tune???
Will I need a tune???
I plan on getting a z-tube with JW pop charger, motordyne spacer, and hks exhaust. Will I need to get a tune with these mods to achieve the max benefit? Also, what kind of spacer do you guys recommend? Can I add a grounding kit on top of the mods I plan on doing without getting a tune? FYI, I have an 07 g35 coupe 5AT.
5/16 spacer is better in almost all regards as far as which spacer to get. Tune is not necessary but it will definitely help maximize your gains. Grounding kit doesn't matter for the tune. You might also want to get test pipes or hfc's or ART pipes before you tune because that is where you will see the biggest power gain and it would suck to have to get tuned then get pipes and not be tuned for them.
Thanks for the information. I have another question. I've been doing some research on JWT pop chargers/Z tube vs. Z tube/Rev up airbox/ K&N Drop in filter. I have read mixed opinions on which choice to go with. Some people say that the pop chargers soak up heat which results in lower throttle response and such. While others love the pop chargers because of the increase in performance and amazing sound. Which opinion is fact? I am trying to figure out which combo I should go with. I definitely want the combination that will give me the most performance gains and best sound. FYI, I live in Florida and it gets super hot here. So if there is a heatsoak problem, ill probably get it lol

JWT will give you the better sound but it may hurt performance a slight amount.
Revup airbox will give you slightly better performance but not as much in the sound department.
If you wanna say you have the best performance setup use the revup airbox, whether you actually get any amount of gain in power is not a sure thing.
If you want the best sounding intake and aggressive tone and will give up a minimal amount of performance go with JWT.
If you don't really care for the sound change and don't want to waste your money on such a small power gain then just keep the stock intake and buy something more useful.

@ OP: Sorry about the semi-thread jack.
Does a tune have to necessarily be purchased from a company such as Cobb, Osirus, etc.? Or can I take it to my local shop and tell them to tune it? Any advice is appreciated.

Yes, you need some platform from which you can reflash(reprogram) the ECU, Osirus is probably the better choice. The cobb unit it has preset maps which can only be changed with a cobb pro tune, additional $$ on top of the unit, while the Osirus tunes for your current mods.
Uprev Osiris
I know for fact that the Osiris tune requires you to purchase a 1 time license fee and tuning cost is on top of that. If you do choose to go with Osiris you have to make sure your dealer doesn't flash your ECU because it will erase the license then you'll have to pay for it again.
You'll also get a choice of 5 different preset maps that you can change "while driving" with your cruise control. Unfortunately if you don't have cruise control, you won't benefit from this feature.
Hope this helps
I have Osiris tune on my Nismo 350z from Church Auto in Southern CA. They are awsome

OP. I have pretty much everything you want on your car. I got the Cobb AccessPort and love it. The tune at Cobb will run you about $400. The preset maps can help out but a true tune will help out more. Every car is different. When I got my first tune I just had the popcharger and z-tube and I was running very lean just from the intake. I would get a tune anytime you change something so that your car runs to it's potential. To save money get everything you want to mod and then tune. Good luck and happy modding!
Thanks for the input guys. The G is the first car I have ever modded, so this is all a learning experience. Still have a few questions though. Once you buy the Osiris license, from there on do you only have to pay for the tune from the shop? Also, is there a way to back up the license key just in case the ECU gets reflashed?? Tony, I am going to buy a set of Megan resonated test pipes to see if I can live with the smell and noise of test pipes. Hopefully in the near future I will buy some ART pipes. However, will installing a set of RTPs without a immediate tune be detrimental in anyway? I've heard so many opinions, I think you would know the best. Thanks again for your replies!

Sorry for the late introduction but I'm not Tony. I am James, marketing manager for Motordyne Engineering as you see on my "signature" down below.
It is nice to meet you

To answer your question, I was never given the option to "back up" the license from Church Automotives, but they did tell me to go to them first where they can "extract" the license out of the ECU so that dealer can do what every they want to do with it and not terminate your license.
License is one time payment. Let’s say it’s $500 and the tune cost is $180. You’ll pay total amount of 680 on your first tune and then whenever you need a re-tune, it'll be just $180. I hope this make sense to you Sean. I would recommend get everything you need to do before your first tune so you only need to it once.
Please forgive me for not comment on the Megan Racing TP.
But I know most conventional test pipes are known to rasp/drone/ smell/ and extremely noisy. These are the comment complains from most of the people I know who had them installed. This is why ART is so differently good because not only do we eliminate all the draw backs of the test pipe, we were able created monster TQ at low end and overall gain through out the rest of the power band on top of the TP.
What I would recommend you do is ask around the form and see if you can find a local friend that has the Megan TP installed, have a ride with him and hear it yourself before you put down the order. That is the best way to make sure you know what you are getting prior to purchase. Hope this helps.

Good luck

James
i had the jwt and yes it gets heatsoaked. However it only really gets bogged down at stops. If all you care about is sound the jwt sounds pretty sweet. The stock airbox already allows more air in than the engine can ingest so there really is no need to change it and it has a superior heat shield.
