Shell V-Power
Shell V-Power
This might be a dumb question but I've been using only V-Power in my G and I'm wondering if it's ok to use such a high octane gas (93) in a new engine? The car runs great on it though

Re: Shell V-Power
Hey, I posted almost the same question in the off topic forum! The octane is fine, but I'm wondering about the "additives" (if there are really) damaging the engine. Or is this the same $hit different name.
Re: Shell V-Power
Sorry I didn't see your post. I was wondering the same thing about the additives. They say it has 5 times the minimum detergents but that could also be good as it prevents deposits from starting in the first place (?)

Re: Shell V-Power
same [censored] different name......its all propoganda....every gas station gets their gas from the same factories/refineries. For example, Sunoco may have a huge refinery in which all their tankers get their gas, but at the same time, they sell their gass to BP and Exxon, etc. Its all in brand packaging.

MyGUnit, you beat me to it.
Gas is gas. Aside from octane differences (87 vs. 93) there is no difference. I am actually surprised noone has mentioned the Sonoco Ultra 94 (I live on the stuff). It truly is the same gas from the same trucks from the same refineries. My father is an oil trader and will tell you the same thing. Brands don't mean a thing in that business, the gas is just gas...
93 = 93 no matter what
87 is garbage and should never grace the tank of a G.

Re: Shell V-Power
Thanks for clearing this up, but my main question is, is it good/better for the engine to run a 93 octane when the manual says 91?

Re: Shell V-Power
What you guys mentioned is only half of the equation. While it is true that all station procure gas from the local refineries, they mix their own additives in the gas giving each brand a slightly different "flavor" (in this case V-Power). How much more useful the additives are is another question.

ARH_twilightblue,
In the manual, it does say use Octane 91 or higher. It is purely safe to use a higher octane and most of the time I use Octane 92 from Sunco gas. Lot of luxury and sport cars use higher octane. If you use the lower octane, then the ECU will read differently as mixture of air and fuel. It may or may not damage the ecu sensor, but the performance will be lower. If we say Gas is Gas, then car is car? Toyota Celica is not same as G35 C as oppose to Octane 87 vs Octane 91. Better grade of the fuel, better performance.

Re: Shell V-Power
actually.... i used to use gas from QT, dunno if other ppl have it other than where i live, and i noticed after i switched to exxon, my gas milage increased a good 2-3mpg. So in conclusion, gas does matter. Don't alwayz go for the cheapest, few pennies more per gallon can get u good milage.

Re: Shell V-Power
Shell V Power is a fancy name for their additive package mostly detergents to keep the internals clean. Most other big oil companies also have their additive packages as well. Some of the smaller (cheaper gas ) companies add very little or nothing to their gas. So much for the additives.
On the other end you have the blending process. Most states mandate oxygenates to be blended into the gas. These consist of ethanol, methanol, MTBE etc. They can effect (lower) gas milage but they help with omissions. Do they effect performance? I don't know. They do lower the BTU rating.
Octane requirements are relative to the elevation you drive at.
If the manual says use 91 octane it probably means at sea level. As you go up in elevation the required octane level drops.
Most of this information was obtained from my brother who is a chemical engineer. He has worked for shell oil company for the past 20 years.

Re: Shell V-Power
hum...I highly doubt this. I mean have you ever tried running racetrac gas?
Before I had my SR20DET I had the KA motor inside and it could except 87 octane in my 240sx. I put in some racetrac crap and I started to knock! My engine stumbled and crap. I then went to chevron and put there 87 and my car ran normal.
The same thing went for my SR where I put in speedway 93 octane and I started to knock and barely could hit stock boost. Something is up!
Don't some gas companies put more water or something like that? I mean how does racetrac or speedway sell it for so cheap yet others cant?

Re: Shell V-Power
I'm not a chemical engineer, but I would have to agree that gas does vary by company.
My dad's check engine light went on (99 accord) and when he took it in they told him to put only shell or bp in because a lot of the others were putting too much ethanol in. A guy at work couldn't get his car to start and when he took it in the mechanic asked him if he'd been using citgo (cheap stuff), which he had. The mechanic said he's been replacing 2 fuel injectors (maybe it was a different part) on average a day and they've all been from citgo gas because they were using so many detergents. So if 87 can vary from gas station to gas station, why can't 93?
On the other hand I've also heard from people who've worked at gas stations that the tanker will top off any other tanks with whatever he has left (93 is low and he's only got 87 left so he puts that in there).
