Just joined the G35 team!

I just bought a 2006 G35 Sport 6MT with 35K for $19K. I feel good about the price I paid, especially since I have nearly 6 months left on the basic warranty and a couple of years on the powertrain warranty. I have seen a number of discussions about oil consumption, oil pooling around the #6 spark plug, rattling flywheels, etc. and their related TSBs. Can anyone list some other things I should keep an eye out for as long as this baby is still under warranty?

Your discussions are great and I cannot wait to learn more about my new baby!

since you are still under warranty, i'd bring it in and have the engine check regarding the oil consumption.. it's a win win situation.. if they say no, then good, plus you'll have a record with them saying so.. if yes, then you can get the problem remedied asap.. 6 mos of basic warranty goes by real quick.. ever think of getting extended warranty as well? i did and when my trans went haywire, i had it replaced for free. well, less the $100 deductable.. otherwise it would have been $6000 out of pocket for a new tranny...

I thought the oil consumption issue only concerned older models? Your window motors are gonna go out every 6 months to a year. Did you buy an extended warranty? Oh and welcome! Where's the pix?

Thanks for the feedback guys! No pix yet...just got it. I have not seen any threads about the windows - they seem fine - any leading indicators of failure?

The oil consumption issue affects 05-07 Manual transmission G35's.

I'd get the oil consumption issue taken care of ASAP.

1. Search around for members in your area who have had it done and find out what dealer they went to. Many dealers will still give you a hard time and ask for proof of EVERY single oil change from when it was bought new. Some will even open up the motor and check for sludge.

2. You will be charged $50 for an oil change. They will tell you to come back within 1000 miles for your first check. Per TSB, you can get you first check between 1001-1500 miles. Common sense will tell you that more mileage, more consumption.

3. When you return for your first check, have them check it in front of you and show you the oil level on the dipstick. DO NOT let the dealer screw you and have them check it out of your sight. If you have more than 8mm low on the dipstick, you should qualify for an engine replacement. Most will tell you to come back after another 1k miles. If you really want a new motor, just take rev the engine out much higher than you usually do and down shift upon stops and avoid 6th on the freeway. that will burn more oil for sure. That's the risk you have to take.

3. If you do get approved, you will have to come back once the new engine arrives if they don't have one. My dealer took about 1.5 days total to do the swap.

4. While they are replacing the motor, enjoy the rental and treat it like one. They gave me a G37 rental.

I got mine replaced cause I took it to the drag strip and made many, many runs. Constant high RPM shifts is a guarantee to burn oil on VQ's which will cause most VQ's to fail the oil consumption test no matter what.

Hope this helps.

How are you checking the oil? Our VQ's have a poor dipstick design. You won't get an accurate reading unless the car has been sitting on a level surface for at least 30-45 minutes.

If your really concerned, spend the $50. If not, wait for the next oil change and ask to initiate an oil consumption test. Print out the TSB and have it in hand.

I usually do wait a good wait after the car's been driving before i check the dipstick.
I check it in my garage so the surface is pretty even.
Just wondering also, my exhaust should be comming in soon, should i hold off on installing it because i may have the oil consumption, or it shouldnt matter either way?

It all depends on the dealership right?

Yeah a few days before it dies it'll go up and down very slowly and make a high pitched squeeling noise. haha Hopefully when your goes, you'll be lucky enough for it to die when it's up and not down in the middle of winter, like me.
