VDC almost killed me today
VDC almost killed me today
... right before a passing zone I downshift to 3rd getting ready to pass a car & tractor trailer. Passing zone comes up, I check, no one coming so I get on it. As soon as I get next to the back wheels of the semi, this huge truck pops out of nowhere coming right at me. So I'm thinking, no problem, I just have to wind out this gear and I'll be gone.. Well, I wind it out and catch 4th. The VDC slip light kicks on and I bog down for a second. The truck is getting closer, I'm starting to sweat a little bit... I finally get into 4th, my head gets snapped back and I am gone. I get back in my lane with a solid 100 ft between me and the truck... I'm just glad I was driving the G, and not my old Integra. If I still had the Integra, I would probably be in a tree or paint on the road.... I'm thinking VDC will stay off for awhile

Re: VDC almost killed me today
Did you hear a loud buzz? That would be the rev limiter kicking in not VDC. 3rd to 4th typically does not have enough punch to break the wheels loose; more likely you missed the shift and over-revved, causing the rev limiter to intrude and shut you down for a split second.

Re: VDC almost killed me today
I wasn't there, and I'm not going to judge, but based only on the story there's a possible "other scenario":
Assuming VDC was working properly, it prevented you from losing traction. If that had happened you wouldn't have gone anywhere. The manner of your driving may have meant that not all of the power you wanted to put down was best for the moment.... VDC may have kept you from getting killed.

tekknikal, I'm not sure what you mean. VDC is like an "in case sh*t happens" system. It's not designed to put MORE power to the ground or speed things up...its purpose is to keep the car in control, and keep things cool in case you start to lose traction.

Re: VDC almost killed me today
There are have been many times when I wish that VDC didn't turn on. Many times when I was gunning it and the VDC kicked in and retarded my performance. For example, when I'm trying to make a right turn or on freeway on ramps, sometimes, I wish it wouldn't turn on. But it takes a little time to get used to the traction aspect and learn how to gradually increase the throttle and not just floor it.

I totally agree with you, Air Splat. The VDC is very annoying when you have turns, especially when they are up hill where sometimes you just want to take off. Lately, I turn off the VDC just for those kind of turns or places and then turn it back on once on cruising/racing speed.

Well.... I am 100% sure I didn't hit the rev limiter. The slip light wouldn't come on if I hit the rev limiter, would it? Maybe there was gravel in the road, or that portion of the road was wet - I didn't notice. All I know is that I absolutely love this car, and I guess I can live with VDC trying to save my life once in awhile

Re: VDC almost killed me today
MrE, I was just saying that when you slowed down for a sec, that was the VDC limiting power... And that if VDC didnt come on, you may have lost traction because you might have put down more powers than the tires can transfer. Your speeding up after that was because VDC "turned off" and (or more appropriately, because-) you had enough traction to go. I'm NOT saying VDC did NOT almost kill you, I'm just presenting another possible scenario of what may have happened.
