Proud New Owner (FIRST PROBLEM)

Well thanks for the heads up initially guys with the advice on common problems to look out for. We went and picked up an 05 G35 coupe grey 45000miles. Mechanically the car is very sound and the price was right so we drove 6 hours and picked it up. Just got back into town and immediately put it in for a provincial safety so that we can plate and insure it.

No major problems to speak of, need an alignment *whatever they always do*. Needs a new windshield thought I could slip it by them but no luck. But heres the part I need your help with. It was also failed because of the driver side seat.

Driver side seat does move forward and back not a problem there. When I first tested the seat, the seat would pivot forward and back but then on the way back that stopped working. Right from the start the recliner would recline back but not back up. So I took the front cover off and fiddled with what I could and notice that when engaging the recliner that you can hear a click *I assume its a relay* but no action. Am I to assume that the motor is toast? Any help is appreciated I want to rip this seat out and figure this out quick within a week while I still have temporary tags on this car.

thanks in advance guys!

Update: Well not much of an update but once I posted that message I thought about it and realized all I have to do is make sure that I'm getting current to that motor. The only thing I REALLY need to know is which motor does what? Thanks guys!

Where did you buy the car from? If it's from a dealership or used car lot, take it back and let them deal with it. If they sold you a car you can't register, then that should be their problem not yours. It's also a safety issue regarding the rocking seats.

it was a private deal, buyer beware its my own fault I shouldn't have been naive and think that it would pass. I know better for next time I guess.

Did you check to make sure you don't have an obstruction? I had that happen on an old Buick years ago and when I pulled the seat I found I had a pinch in one of the threads used to position the seat. It caused the motor to bind. Not sure there is enough room on a G to check that without pulling the seat. You may just want to get a dealer to fault isolate it unless you have the right test equipment. If you had a multimeter you could at least do a continuity check on the motor.

had the seat out in 5 minutes, heading to work in a second to get a current tester. I figure I'm going to do process of elimination to see which motor does what and then since I still have motor working properly I'll know if the other motors are getting the right amount of power. If they are I'll check the mechanical mechanism for binds such as you speak off but I would assume that it means the motor is toast.

If motor replacement is my last option is there a cheaper place to find one other then the stealership? Or even an upgrade available?

thanks guys.

Cool

Not sure about a cheap replacement motor, but check the marketplace. I hear good things about Riverside Ifiniti though I haven't done business there personally. Is there a salvage yard out there? Maybe you can scavenge a motor there cheap.

I just took a look under my seat and I can see on the right side there is a rod that screws around to raise/lower the seat pitch. If that's stripped or bound that could be your problem too. I can't really see much else (past dusk out here). Of course mine is an 04 coupe, so it may have a different seat configuration.

Had you looked a little closer you might have discovered the cracked windshield....life's a learning process. I'd take the seat out and check what's under it and why it's binding. Buying a used car there's no telling what might be under the seat....lost child or a 6pk. Then you can test the motor and clean everything. Riverside Infiniti is a sponsor here on DRIVER, they charge far less than your neighborhood stealership....800-913-3130. Let them know you're a member DRIVER.

I did notice the crack before hand they had it fixed and it seemed very minimal but I guess that was enough to fail it. I'll be more careful of that next time.

Well took a voltage meter and tested the wiring for the 3 motors that I could find.

Front Motor- 12v one direction 12v the other direction. That motor operates fine and seat operates perfectly. *this is the seat forward-reverse action*

Middle Motor- 12v one direction 12v the other direction. This is the rear most black switch. *can anyone tell me what that operates? I'm guessing its the lumbar.*

Back Motor- 12v one direction 12v the other direction. This is the front black switch *I'm guessing this is for the seat tilt*

Don't know where the motor is for the recliner I need to get my hands on a schematic so I know where to look. Regardless I have two switches that are sending power to the motors but no action... I'm guessing the motors are fried If anyone has a clue as to where the recliner motor is located please let me know.

As far as I know, G coupe driver seats have 3 functions for your model year. One moves the seat forward and back, one raises and lowers the front portion of the seat, and one raises and lowers the rear portion of the seat. Therefore, it's a combination of the last two that gives the height and tilt of the seat.

when you say rear portion of the seat do you mean the back rest or the actual back portion or half of the seat itself? I have 4 switches I'm pretty sure they all have a purpose...

sometimes the problem could be the switch itself...maybe needs some cleaning.. might as well have that checked too..

Found the last motor guys, the recliner motor is in the back portion of the seat itself, where as the other 3 are underneither the asscushion. Checked the connection on that one aswell and it is receiving 12v for either action. Again I'm assuming its the motor.
